Patrick Hughes Paintings

British, b. 1939

Patrick Hughes was born in Birmingham, England, in October 1939. He is a self taught artist who plays with perspective, optical illusions and figure-ground relationships. Building upon the work of M.C. Escher, Rene Magritte and Richard Artschwager, Hughes' paintings form a bridge between painting which is static and two-dimensional, and sculpture which is not.

Hughes held his first exhibition in 1961 and went on to develop his distinct perspective studies in the early years of his career. In calling the main body of his work, “Reverspective,” Hughes aims to warp our perceptions by constructing solid space through the use of sculpted painting.

Hughes builds his sculptured paintings using board which is taped together, gessoed and sanded until it is a pristine wall relief which mimics the shape of space. He then goes on to compose images of rectilinear forms such as buildings, books, doorways, boxes and gallery walls. The resultant painted reliefs baffle his audience by demonstrating how deceptive appearances can be. His Surrealist horizons imply deep space while the surface of the painting appears flat. Yet upon walking toward these seemingly flat paintings, they loom out at us, creating a disorientating, moving experience. Hughes challenges the assumptions of our eye and our brain, raising important questions about human perception and the subconscious.

Soon after his first appearance on the London art scene Hughes began exhibiting with Angela Flowers Gallery and continued to do so for over 40 years. In addition, he has taken part in many solo and group exhibitions across the UK and in America. As well as painting, he has also written and collated three books on visual and verbal rhetoric.

"Untitled, " Seymour Fogel, Geometric Abstraction, Texas Hard-Edge
By Seymour Fogel
Located in New York, NY
Seymour Fogel Untitled Oil on illustration board construction 10 x 7 1/2 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Charles and Faith McCracken Larry and Trish Heichel Private Collection Seymour Fogel was born in New York City on August 24, 1911. He studied at the Art Students League and at the National Academy of Design under George Bridgeman and Leon Kroll. When his formal studies were concluded in the early 1930s he served as an assistant to Diego Rivera who was then at work on his controversial Rockefeller Center mural. It was from Rivera that he learned the art of mural painting. Fogel was awarded several mural commissions during the 1930s by both the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, among them his earliest murals at the Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1936, a mural in the WPA Building at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair, a highly controversial mural at the U.S. Post Office in Safford, Arizona (due to his focus on Apache culture) in 1941 and two murals in what was then the Social Security Building in Washington, D.C., also in 1941. Fogel's artistic circle at this time included Phillip Guston, Ben Shahn, Franz Kline, Rockwell Kent and Willem de Kooning. In 1946 Fogel accepted a teaching position at the University of Texas at Austin and became one of the founding artists of the Texas Modernist Movement. At this time he began to devote himself solely to abstract, non-representational art and executed what many consider to be the very first abstract mural in the State of Texas at the American National Bank in Austin in 1953. He pioneered the use of Ethyl Silicate as a mural medium. Other murals and public works of art done during this time (the late 1940s and 1950s) include the Baptist Student Center at the University of Texas (1949), the Petroleum Club in Houston (1951) and the First Christian Church, also in Houston (1956), whose innovative use of stained glass panels incorporated into the mural won Fogel a Silver Medal from the Architectural League of New York in 1958. Fogel relocated to the Connecticut-New York area in 1959. He continued the Abstract Expressionism he had begun exploring in Texas, and began experimenting with various texturing media for his paintings, the most enduring of which was sand. In 1966 he was awarded a mural at the U.S. Federal Building in Fort Worth, Texas. The work, entitled "The Challenge of Space", was a milestone in his artistic career and ushered in what has been termed the Transcendental/Atavistic period of his art, a style he pursued up to his death in 1984. Painted and raw wood sculpture...

Dice And Dollars By Patrick Hughes
By Patrick Hughes
Located in New Orleans, LA
Patrick Hughes b. 1939 British Dice and Dollars Signed, dated "Dice and Dollars / Patrick Hughes / 2023" Oil on board construction Created by leading British contemporary artist Patrick Hughes, Dice and Dollars displays a three-dimensional interior scene reflecting on the vibrant culture of New Orleans. Part painting, part sculpture and part optical illusion, this work by the London-based artist immerses the viewer in a fragmented room with an open window, revealing one of the Crescent City's most iconic homes. Hughes' experimentations with perspective and perception involve the viewer in a highly tangible way that is rarely seen in fine art. Driven by ideas of originality and engagement, Hughes is among the leading figures in contemporary British art. In Dice and Dollars , Hughes draws inspiration from one of America’s most alluring cities. In this composition of the Louisiana city known for the birth of jazz, the music of New Orleans takes center stage with a poster of Louis Armstrong on the left wall and a rendition of Fernando Botero’s famous painting, La Cantante to the right. The singing woman is framed by an upper-room view of the familiar orange and fern-clad LaBranche building on Royal...

Love, Love, Love By Patrick Hughes
By Patrick Hughes
Located in New Orleans, LA
Patrick Hughes b. 1939 British Love, Love, Love Signed, dated "Love, Love, Love / Patrick Hughes / 2020" Oil on board construction A testament to the artist’s knowledge of contemporary art, Love, Love, Love displays a three-dimensional, illusionistic scene for which Patrick Hughes’s oeuvre has become renowned. Part painting, part sculpture and part optical illusion, this work by the London-based artist invites the viewer to examine Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture as it is unboxed from a crate. The three-dimensional construction breaks free from the wall and appears to shift as the viewer moves in front of it. The artist’s experimentations with perspective and perception involve the viewer in a highly tangible way that is rarely seen in fine art. Driven by ideas of engagement, originality and humor, Hughes is one of the leading figures in contemporary British art. Placed in a somewhat surreal setting, Love, Love, Love depicts the monumental red, blue and green sculpture on a patch of green grass. The wooden crate which encases the famed sculpture stands stark against the vivid blue sky and billowing clouds. Hughes generates an illusionistic perspective in this construction that immerses the viewer in a dreamlike environment, where this trademark of Philadelphia’s Center City is placed in a new environment outside of time and place. In an interview, Hughes commented on the piece: “I enjoy borrowing recognizable imagery from artists such as Robert Indiana’s LOVE [...] and inserting it into my reverspectives. I see this as a satirical venture, that enhances audience engagement through their sighting of recognizable images and symbols in my works.” For Hughes to feel his art is complete, it needs the physical presence of the spectator, engaging the body as well as the eye and mind. The use of the psychological relationship between reality and representation destabilizes both the viewer and the image being viewed. Hughes aims for this immersive experience, with the goal of taking his viewers somewhere they have never been before, though elements, such as famous architecture, walls, library settings and landscapes seem familiar. Hughes coined the term reverspective for these types of constructions, which he describes as “perspective in reverse.” He utilizes the traditional idea of linear perspective in which an artist can create the illusion of receding space and dimensionality with converging lines upon a single point on the horizon line. However, he reverses this concept by bringing these lines forward into space using three-dimensional planes while still abiding by a strict vanishing point. Hughes says, “When the principles of perspective are reversed, the mind is deceived into believing that a static painting can move of its own accord.” Born in 1939, Patrick Hughes completed formal training at the Leeds College of Art before beginning his artistic career. He developed his first reverspective work in 1964 for the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Entitled Sticking-Out Room, Hughes’ hypnotic vision of an interior room seemed to recede in space, marking the beginning of the artist’s long...

Patrick Hughes b. 1939 British Sea Views Signed, titled and dated “Sea Views / Patrick Hughes / 2017” (en verson) Oil on panel Almost defying definition and description, the artwork of London artist Patrick Hughes explores perspective in a most fascinating and puzzling way. His signature 3-dimensional constructions, dubbed reverspectives, challenge the idea of traditional perspective, instead creating a completely unique visual experience. These constructions appear to move in conjunction with the viewer’s movements, inviting participation and sparking curiosity. Hughes has long been intrigued by ideas of illusion, visual irony and how one can be misled by the familiar. This work, entitled Sea Views, employs an ordinary beach scene punctuated by gallery walls displaying, ironically, more seascapes, including the famous Japanese woodblock print...
