'2' Restored Vintage Witco Conquistador Tiki Throne Chairs in Original Red Fur
By Witco, William Westenhaver / Witco
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Pair of restored Witco Conquistador tiki throne chairs in original red fur. These chairs are absolutely wild in the best kind of way. The original red fur fabric has a thick pile. This bright red upholstery adds drama to the high-back, iron cladded, hand-carved throne. As if all that isn’t enough.. the arms are carved like gorilla paws. Each throne chair is crowned with two hand-carved conquistador heads donning their iconic helmets. These highly collectible and hard-to-find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture.
We have four of these chairs available, two arm chairs and two armless chairs. This listing is for just the two armchairs. The two armless chairs are sold separate. We also have the matching dining table, sold separate.

Vintage Witco Tiki King Throne Hand-Carved Highback Chairs in Faux Leopard Fur
By Witco, William Westenhaver / Witco
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Take a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Adorned top to bottom with hand-carved intricate detail. These highly collectible and hard to find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture.
This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. We're more than certain these will exceed expectations.
Robert Post Junior and Artist William Westenhaver Created Witco in 1959. The two capitalized on the exotica trend by creating lavishly bold, roughly carved wood furniture and decor. The delightfully dramatic furniture was so beloved during the period that Elvis created an entire “Jungle Room” in his Graceland home featuring Witco furniture! Witco remains a mainstay among collectors today. You can even see original Witco pieces still in use at Graceland, and other iconic tiki venues like Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn all located in Florida.
We have other Witco items available including a pair of these conquistador chairs with arms, Witco cat...

Mid Century Modern Witco Tiki Bar Carved Faced Barstool with Faux Leopard Seat
By William Westenhaver / Witco, Witco
Located in St. Louis, MO
Single Mid-Century Witco Tiki barstool - tribal sitting figure with carved face and original faux leopard upholstery designed by William Westenhaver. In nice original condition, no damage noted to wood. Upholstery shows wear.
In 1958, a small importing company named Western International Trading Co. was founded in Washington State. Tropical style had taken over the United States, and there were tropical-themed bars, restaurants and even bowling alleys nationwide.
Founders of Western International Trading Co (or Witco, as it’s more commonly known today) William Westenhaver, Robert Cookson and William’s cousin Robert Post Jr. started by importing art and mosaics from South and Central America, as well as paintings and sculptural art from lesser known American artists. But soon, William Westenhaver suggested they make their own tropical-inspired wood carvings. By the end of 1958, after a furniture and decor show in Los Angeles, the carved wood decor was a hit across the country.
The artists started carving, crafting and creating furnishings that represented the Post WWII ideal of the South Pacific and ‘tropical culture.’ Soon, Witco took off and became synonymous with the ‘luxurious’ Tropical / Hawaiiana / Tiki style. Witco reached the height of its popularity in the early to mid 1960s before shuttering a decade later.
Mid-Century ‘Tiki’ Chic:
After traveling through the Polynesian islands, a man named Donn Beach brought tropical flair and Polynesian culture to the states to create a one-of-a-kind experience. Beach started a restaurant and bar, called “Don the Beachcomber...

Witco Hand-Carved Dragon Themed Tiki Bar with Two Stools
By Witco, William Westenhaver / Witco
Located in Media, PA
A beautiful and classic tiki bar set by the legendary manufacturer Witco. This bar comes from a whole line of dragon-themed furniture that Witco produced in the mid-20th century. The ends of the bar top extend into dragon heads and there are scale patterns carved throughout the design, including, most beautifully I think, on the backrests of the stools. The bar stools are upholstered with their original faux fur fabric and the seats are soft and clean. The whole set was incredibly well cared for. There is no significant damage to any of the wood. It's some of the best-kept Witco I've seen in years.
We recovered this from a speakeasy hidden in a suburban home outside of Philadelphia. In the home you flipped a switch on the wall and a bookshelf slide to the side to reveal a secret bar...

Pair of WITCO Tiki Swivel Lounge Chairs
By William Westenhaver / Witco
Located in Hanover, MA
Tiki chic pair of barrel back swivel lounge chairs designed by William Westenhaver with tropical inspired carved cedar and textured velvet upholstery.
Chairs have a recessed carved wood square plinth under which is an unseen round swivel platform base, enabling 360 degree rotation.
Very clean examples ready to place.
Westenhaver's WITCO (Western International Trading Co.) literally changed the face of tiki with its Avant Garde carving style. His rough, chunky, loose, abstract shapes stood in stark contrast to the smooth and sleek style that dominated earlier 20th century design. Westenhaver's company, Witco, was founded in Mount Vernon, Washington in 1959 and operated for 20 years. His furniture and carvings were sold coast-to-coast, reaching their zenith when Elvis famously furnished his Jungle Room at Graceland entirely with Witco. William Westenhaver spent some time carving for hotels and restaurants in Florida; his pieces can still be found at Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn. A Witco fountain provided the logo and souvenir tiki mug...
