American Studio Movement Sculptural Dragonfly Table by Andrew J Willner, 1973
By Andrew Willner
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A fantastical table in the form of a dragonfly by American Studio craftsman, Andrew J Willner, executed in rare English brown oak, its eight individual sections sculpted by hand and constructed with pegged mortise and tenon joinery. Made during Willner’s tenure as wood artist in residence at Peters Valley School of Crafts, where he worked alongside Emil Milan and Karl Seemuller, this table is exceptionally realized and exemplifies Willner’s interest in the segmented forms of the natural world which became part of his signature fantastical style. Bears the artist’s carved initials and date to the underside, ‘AJW Sept. 73’. Well-preserved, likely refinished at some point.
Literature: Meilach, D. Z. (1975). Creating modern furniture (pp. 288–289). New York: Crown Publishers.
*depth of top = 17.5 inches
*depth of base = 24 inches
Andrew Willner is a modern polymath of sorts whose CV credits include those of boat builder, environmentalist, permaculturist, city planner, photographer, and public speaker in addition to master woodworker. He received his earliest training in woodworking in the basement wood shop of his grandfather who ran a lumber business selling reclaimed wood from construction sites.
He earned his Bachelor degree in City Planning at the University of Virginia, did his graduate study in furniture design and sculpture under Wendell Castle student, Alan Lazarus, at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968 and 1969, and became the first woodworking artist in residence at then-experimental and now-renowned Peters Valley School of Crafts in Layton, New Jersey upon its founding in 1970. It was at Peters Valley that Willner first met Emil Milan who was to become his mentor and life-long friend. Examples of Willner’s work are included in the 2018 monograph, Emil Milan: Mid Century Master.
In the late 1970s, Willner met Vladimir Kagan at the Rhinebeck Craft Fair - - the chance encounter led to Kagan commissioning a chair design from Willner, to be available in several variations, for a show at Kagan’s NYC gallery. Willner used one of his early, original, bent and laminated designs for the commission and over the course of a year or so, a limited number of examples were sold through the Kagan showroom under the Kagan name with Willner credited as the designer.
In 1980, Muppets’ genius, Jim Henson...

Vladimir Kagan Architectural Louvered & Illuminated Room Divider with COA, 1967
By Vladimir Kagan
Located in Brooklyn, NY
An incredibly rare louvered and illuminated room divider in solid walnut floating over a cylindrical brass foot, custom-designed by Vladimir Kagan circa 1967. Six sculptural, marquise-shaped slats are angled at 45 degrees to the frame and flank the light box which houses a single 6-foot fluorescent bulb.
Authenticated by and registered with the Vladimir Kagan Design Group, this piece is offered to the collector with all corresponding documents including certificate of authenticity, company letter, related archival photos, and numbered registration plaque. While their archivists have seen similar slatted dividers that Kagan designed (see last image in this listing), they’d not seen one with an incorporated lighting element before and thus feel that this example may well be one-of-a-kind or, at the very least, from a strictly limited run.
That said, it seems that this general concept of combining lighting with room partitioning...

Zoë Powell, Ceramic Vessel 05, Perianth Series, 2021
By Zoë Powell
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Title: Perianth 05
Year: 2021
Freeform ceramic sculpture made from a blend of porcelaneous and stoneware clays hand-collected by the artist in Minnesota. Its surface is hand-polished with diamond sandpaper to render a matte finish. Signed with the artist’s mark along the interior rim. Each piece is original and one of a kind.
The forms in this collection are influenced by botanical morphology - specifically, the ‘perianth’ or floral envelope, whose petals serve to protect the most sensitive part of the plant before the eventual dispersal of the fruit’s seed. Powell’s sculptures seek to evoke a similar feeling of comfort and protection, serving as reminders of another time, both past and future, when one's family is close and the world feels safe, offering an escape from the ephemerality of the present which can leave one feeling vulnerable and exposed. The Perianth series functions both as a personal etiology for the artist and as a broader exploration of the universal themes of nostalgia, sentimentality, and familial memory
In terms of process, Powell is interested in manipulating material into something it essentially is not - shaping crude, raw clay, still studded with naturally occurring sands and stones, into incredibly delicate forms. The resulting pieces are light and elegant — impossibly thin and balanced in surprising ways. Each sculpture’s surface, riddled with scrapes and craters, is astonishingly soft and sensuous to the touch and each piece feels precious in such a finessed and attenuated state.
This concept of defied expectations extends beyond the physical properties of the work in that Powell is also investigating the mutability of perception, specifically in terms of Perianth’s overarching nostalgia and memory themes - - the present is intimidating in its authenticity, with no space for embellishment or fantasy, while memories of, and the subsequent yearning for, an era, place or person can become nebulous and fictionalized with distance and time. In this way, the works in this series act as physical manifestations of the unanticipated and misremembered.
