Emilio Pucci silk scarf

About the Item

Emilio Pucci silk scarf Scarf from the 1957 Palio collection, dedicated to the contrade of Siena, on which an exhibition and a dedicated book were also held. Specifically this is dedicated to the "Bruco" contrada. Cm. 90x90 approx. Hand rolled hem Very good conditions Extremely rare The word "Palio" derives from "pallium" or "drape of precious fabric sewn in vertical bands and lined with hundreds of squirrel skins" which was the prize of the race, as well as a sum of money equal to seventy thalers. The oldest document testifying to the Sienese custom of the Palio dates back to 1238 (13th century): at that time only nobles could participate in the race. Subsequently, when the wars were delegated to mercenaries and the "Contrade" developed in the municipal area, the show we know today was born. Twice a year, on the 2nd of July and the 16th of August, Piazza del Campo of Siena hosts a wonderful and popular celebration drawing spectators from all over the world. Representing historical neighborhoods of the city, called “contrade”, pairs made of a horse and a rider ride into an amazing race on the slippery surface of the piazza. The beauty of the Palio has been told over the centuries through many forms: poetry, narration, photography, music. But in 1957 the extraordinary nature of the Palio traveled the whole world, through fashion with the special collection of the great Emilio Pucci. In 1955, the Marquis Emilio Pucci took part in the great emotion of the Palio of August, in which he was deeply impressed by the costumes, the colors and above all by the palpable emotion that flowed in that Piazza, which seemed to be the center of the entire world. Hence the inspiration to immerse oneself in the magic of the contrade, in their colors and their myths, composing and decomposing their motifs with great elegance. The collection was presented for the first time in Siena, with 17 models like 17 contrade, who wore the bright motifs in the alleys of the historic center, alongside pages on horseback. The collection consisted of scarves, shirts, printed trousers, evening dresses, swimsuits, towels. It was the designer's first collection with an accurate and detailed project coherence, where he dedicated a scarf printed on silk twill in different color variations to each contrada. Emilio Pucci: «The black and white of the marble of the Cathedral, the red of its buildings, the fantastic colors of the Contrade. Here are my inspirations. It may seem strange that I chose such a remote theme for my work that has such a modern flavor. But I, a Florentine craftsman today, feel very close to the craftsmen of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and it is precisely the medieval element of the Palio with its richness of geometric patterns and color that fascinated me" This is how Pucci describes his inspiration for a collection that has remained in the history of fashion. The collection was presented in Florence, at Palazzo Pitti, in 1957 to enormous success, awarded with the Neiman Marcus Fashion Oscar, the greatest recognition for fashion. Siena and the beauty of its traditions opened the doors to Pucci in the affirmation of Made in Italy in the world, passing through the USA and the Soviet Union, in events more unique than rare. The collection was so special because it proposed an analysis of the customs of a symbolic city like Siena, making the past-present combination extremely fresh and current, practical and modern. Siena consecrates Pucci and Pucci consecrates Siena and precisely these typically fourteenth-century fantasies, the soul of the beauty of the Palio, radically change Pucci's aesthetics, leading him to reshape the style that we all know, geometric and flamboyant, in a unique combination of beauty and tradition.
