Alexander McQueen
British fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen, the original creative engine behind the Alexander McQueen label, was beloved for his expert tailoring and theatrical runway shows. After his suicide in 2010, fans left tributes to the man and his talents outside Alexander McQueen boutiques worldwide. Record-breaking crowds visited the posthumous retrospective of the designer’s work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Victoria and Albert in London.
The inspirations for vintage Alexander McQueen bags, dresses, jackets and other items came from many quarters — film, music, current events, history, his heritage and fashions of the past. The designer's runway presentations were not just displays of clothing but were personal expressions of the zeitgeist, often touching on our cultural anxieties and concerns. McQueen’s own thoughts and feelings about love, death, gender, genocide, colonialism, global warming and the extinction of species all appear in his pieces.
McQueen certainly shook up fashion; he was a born Rottweiler. His upbringing on a council estate in north London played a part, but his family was close and supportive, not dysfunctional. He was proud of his Scottish heritage: He was a defiant fashion warrior. His historical themes and shows — such as “Highland Rape,” 2002, which was inspired by England’s “rape of Scotland,” as McQueen called it — always invoked powerful reactions from his audience of fashion pros.
“What you see in the work is the person himself. And my heart is in my work,” McQueen told Harper’s Bazaar in 2007.
It is perhaps this heart, and the heart’s exposure, that drew the crowds and made McQueen's creations both popular and emotionally resonant. Because the work was personal and thus layered with feeling, the motifs — decorative embellishments and fabric choices — have meaning. In other words, in McQueen’s oeuvre, plaid is more than simply a pattern.

- Vintage 1970s Madame Grès Haute Couture Beaded Berry Motif Navy Sheer Silk GownLocated in Beverly Hills, CAGorgeous Madame Gres haute couture two-piece dress ensemble dating back to the mid 1970's. Madame Gres felt that the true job of the couturier was not to create a name for one's self, as many designers do, but to pay rigorous attention to the clothing. This stunning navy-blue sheer silk organza dress has so much detail, you can tell it was made with loving devotion. The bodice is a unique cap-sleeve hourglass nipped-waist design with figure flattering attached sash-belt. The sash can be wrapped around in a cummerbund style or pulled back as a waist-tie. The sparkling holly berry novelty hand-done bead work really makes this piece modern and relevant. The work itself must have taken weeks. - Vintage 1978 Lanvin Couture Black Sheer Silk & Stripe Velvet Billow-Sleeve GownBy Lanvin ParisLocated in Beverly Hills, CAThis extremely gorgeous Lanvin Couture sheer silk chiffon dress from their 1978 fall-winter collection is a statement piece. I love the beautiful bohemian chic vibe mixed with an elegant refinement. The striped velvet trim adds the perfect amount of color to the garment. The bodice has a stunning ruffle collar with dramatic billow-sleeves. Shaped with an elastic band, the figure flattering cut adds a sophisticated blousy nature while still showcasing your waistline. Under the direction of Jules Francois-Crahay, Lanvin was a playground for imagination. This vibrant primary hues is the perfect example of this. Lanvin may be the oldest fashion house in Paris, but it has also managed to remain one of the most relevant. - Vintage 1969 Nina Ricci Couture Documented Rainbow Block-Color Velvet Maxi DressBy Nina RicciLocated in Beverly Hills, CAThe French fashion house Nina Ricci, known for its feminine, ladylike clothing, has long been the go-to for Parisian chic. Elegant Frenchwomen and their daughters streamed steadily through the doors of Maison Ricci, seeking debutante dresses, party frocks and wedding trousseaus distinguished by fine details and luxurious fabrics. To achieve her figure-flattering cuts, the seasoned dressmaker draped on a live mannequin, pinning and snipping with a couturier's care. This breathtaking rainbow stripe block-color gown, dating back to fall-winter 1969, is a perfect example of this brand's genius. The bodice has lean, long sleeves with an hourglass wide sash belted waist. I adore the bold primary colors and flattering bell-shape skirting. I totally see this walking down any red carpet or at a special holiday event! - Gianni Versace 1997 Couture fall black leather gownBy Gianni Versace Couture, Gianni VersaceLocated in CAPELLE AAN DEN IJSSEL, ZHGianni Versace was an influential Italian fashion designer who founded the Versace brand. In the fall of 1997, he presented his couture collection in Paris, which was widely acclaimed for its opulent fabrics, bold prints, and intricate detailing. The collection featured several notable pieces, such as a black evening gown with a plunging neckline and a gold-encrusted jacket. However, just a few days later, on July 15th, 1997, Gianni was tragically murdered outside his Miami Beach home. Despite his untimely death, his contributions to the world of fashion continue to be celebrated, and his legacy remains an inspiration too many. This collection is iconic as it’s the final collection before his passing. The collection very much showed a new direction for the house.
