Large Pair of Bronze Lionized Shih Tzus Foo Dogs 20th Century Asian Sculptures
About the Item
A large and impressive pair of bronze lionized Shih Tzus - also known as Fu (Foo) dogs. The pair each have wonderful detail, great scale and true heaviness and quality. The artistically tufted manes, the lean bodies, the rich and warm patina - these all come together to present a striking pair of Asian bronze sculptures. These sculptures serve a higher purpose as well, from the Love To Know website: "The foo dog in feng shui is a symbol of protection when used in pairs outside of a front door. Known as the Imperial Guardian Lions, the name foo (or fu) dog, is widely used in Western culture, but they are known as lions in Chinese culture since ancient times." And to continue on our study of meaning and representation in art, from the Source of Antiques website: "Dogs of Foo are guardian animals that originated in China and can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-211 CE). These lion-like creatures were often placed at the entrances of palaces, temples, and homes to guard and protect. Foo dogs are almost always shown in pairs, with one male and one female, to symbolise yin and yang. The tradition of displaying foo dogs spread to other parts of Asia, including Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Singapore. These guardian lions are known as ‘komainu’ in Japanese culture. In addition to warding off evil spirits, these mythical creatures symbolise prosperity and success." Impressive and fascinating stuff to be sure. This pair has some surface grime and some light scratches, but really nothing else that I can see. More importantly, I can see these in your home.
