1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan
By Tomio Kinoshita
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Tomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014)
Big Boys, 1960
Woodblock print
Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm)
Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm)
Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita
Titled: in pencil at lower left
Edition: 30/50
Condition: Very good
The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images.
One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...

Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful and rich woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. This print titled "Mount Fuji in Moonlight, Kawai Bridge (Tsukiyo no Fuji, Kawaibashi)" was originally published in 1947 and it depicts a man heading home crossing the river on the Kawai bridge as evening descends with the majestic Mount Fuji in the background. This wonderful image is widely considered to be one of Hasui's masterworks - with the rich blue tones of nighttime and the complexly composed placement of Mount Fuji.
The woodblock print is signed Hasui and sealed Kawase, published by Watanabe Shozaburo.
A rarer and harder-to-find, very coveted image by Hasui. Would make a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ print collection.

Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川廣重 Woodblock from"The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" 1832
Located in Norton, MA
Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川廣重 Woodblock from"The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" 1832
Artist:
Hiroshige Utagawa was born in Edo as Tokutaro Ando and grew up in a minor samurai family. His father belonged to the firefighting force assigned to Edo Castle. It is here that Hiroshige was given his first exposure to art: legend has it that a fellow fireman tutored him in the Kano School of Painting, though Hiroshige’s first official teacher was Rinsai. Though Hiroshige tried to join Toyokuni Utagawa's studio, he was turned away. In 1811, young Hiroshige entered an apprenticeship with the celebrated Toyohiro Utagawa. After only a year, he was bestowed with the artist name Hiroshige. He soon gave up his role in the fire department to focus entirely on painting and print design. During this time he studied painting, intrigued by the Shijo school. Hiroshige’s artistic genius went largely unnoticed until 1832.
In Hiroshige's groundbreaking series of woodblock prints, The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (1832-1833), he captured the journey along the Tokaido road, the highway connecting Edo to Kyoto, the imperial capital. With the Tokugawa Shogunate relaxing centuries of age-old restrictions on travel, urban populations embraced travel art and Hiroshige Utagawa became one of the most prominent and successful ukiyo-e artists. He also produced kacho-e (bird-and-flower pictures) to enormous success. In 1858, at the age of 61, he passed away as a result of the Edo cholera epidemic.

Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Print Yosaku Feeling Ill, 1948
By Junichiro Sekino
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino.
This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner.
The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work.
Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including:
The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world.
Would be a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print...

Kaoru Kawano Signed Lifetime Edition Japanese Woodblock Print the Big Owl
By Kaoru Kawano
Located in Studio City, CA
An engaging and quite coveted work by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of women, children, and animals. Stylistically, he was one of the first Japanese artists to combine Western-style elements with the traditional methods of woodblock printmaking. This work is known as "The Big Owl" Kawano's owl images are some of his most popular works, this one in particular.
This print is hand signed in pencil and sealed (in red) by Kawano within the image.
This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime print. Prints made and signed by Kawano are becoming harder to find.
A very beautiful and rich image. Would make for a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection or eye-catching stand-out accent work in about any setting.

Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Rooftop View
By Junichiro Sekino
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully composed and richly colored, limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Junichiro Sekino.
This relatively large print, which is of a rooftop view of a temple shrine in Japan (perhaps Nagasaki as he did a similar print in 1975 but perhaps Kyoto or Tokyo) is hand pencil signed, sealed / stamped in red, numbered (18/128), and dated (1972). The image is likely from Sekino's coveted rooftop series that he did featuring various rooftop patterns from around the world including Japan and Italy. An exquisite and rare / hard-to-find work.
Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including:

About the artist
Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote Kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West...
