Japanese Lion Gion Festival Dance Mask, Lacquered wood, Late Edo period This lion mask can be found at the head of a float in the Gion festival. It is normally attached to a garment which represents the body of the lion. It sports lacquered black eyebrows, red cheeks, gold eyes, movable ears (connected with a string), a prominent nose, and a mouth showing black teeth which opens up and down. Minimal losses of lacquer in places consistent with age. Late Edo period, 19th century.
