Pair of Chinese Vintage Foo Dogs Guardian Lions on Bases with Sandstone Patina
About the Item
A pair of vintage Chinese stone Foo Dogs guardian lions from the mid-20th century, with sandstone patina, on rectangular bases. Created in China during the midcentury period, this pair of Chinese guardian lions features a left and right facing male and a female, each sitting on a base carved with spheres and geometric motifs. The lions are very expressive, with their open mouths while one of their paws is resting on a sphere. Their detailed manes are carved as cloudy whirls, reminding us of their celestial aspect. In tradition, these lions were used as stone guardians in the exterior courtyard of a temple. With their skillful depiction and sandstone patina, this pair of Chinese male and female stone guardian lions will be a great decorative addition to any home, perhaps placed in a doorway to welcome visitors.
