This impressive near life-size bronze statue named ‘Bertha’ is made by British artist David Backhouse. It was originally made for his exhibition at the Alwin Gallery in London in 1979. It depicts a crouching nude female in spectacular detail and is inscribed with the numbers ‘1,1’ making it a one-off piece. This is an extraordinary bronze sculpture of a Classic male nude by artist Dean Kugler. Attention to detail and complete understanding of the human figure are evident. The figure stands with most of his weight on one foot, contrapposto, and his arm stretched overhead revealing a powerful, muscular physique. With inspiration from Michelangelo's unfinished series of sculptures housed at the Galleria Dell'Acadamia Museum in Florence, displayed in the hall leading to Michelangelo's David sculpture, this figure too is bound within its own material symbolizing the eternal human struggle to free themselves from material trappings. The sculpture is beautifully custom mounted on a stone base. His 3D work is featured primarily at Gallery Victor Armendariz in Chicago. In the last three years, Dean has also been featured at Abend Gallery in Denver, The Figge Art Museum, and Bereskin Gallery in Iowa. He has shown at SOFA Chicago in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and participated in ArtPrize in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He sees himself primarily as a sculptor due to the challenges he finds and thrives on within the process. In all its beauty, crudeness, and subtleties, the figure offers infinite opportunities to express feelings and emotions. There is also a physicality to sculpture that requires the work to be experienced through movement in order to reveal more about the piece. Dean has always been drawn to the interactive nature of large-scale sculpture that is available to the public - he loves the idea that his work entices the observer to go beyond what they can see and add tactility to the experience. By using both realism and abstraction, he creates a visual that challenges the viewer to resolve what they are seeing. Therefore, providing a greater connection between the artist and the viewer. A rare and fabulous French Art Deco large bronze signed sculpture of a bunting panther by Andre Vincent Becquerel, French, 1893-1981 This lovely cast, in a warm dark brown patina with green undertones is sculpted with highly stylized anatomical details. The sculpture rests on self base. Becquerel's favorite subject matter was cats. He often captured them in a natural setting, stretching, stalking, clawing at a tree stump or walking in tandem. The model offered here with the panther bunting/rubbing against a stump of a tree is a rare version. This innate feline behavior is seen as a sign of affection, or of a transfer of their scent to claim territory or marking you as a friend. Becquerel was born in northern France. He attended the École des Beaux-arts in Paris and studied in the ateliers of Hector Lemaître and Prosper Lecourtier, the Animalier sculptor. He also worked with Charles Valton, who had studied under both Barye and Fremiet, two other renown animalier sculptors. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1914 and continued to do so for the rest of his career. In 1944 Becquerel was awarded a bronze medal by The ‘Artistes Français’ and a gold medal in 1945. In 1952 he won the Prix de l’Yser, which made him hors concours and thus above the future competition process.
