Pair of 19th Century Cast Iron Urns on Marbleized Pedestals
About the Item
This lovely pair of Campania form urns on painted and marbleized bases are from the 19th century. The urns show more wear and surface than the pedestals and both were used indoors as planters in an entry hall when we purchased them. The urns cast in iron are most certainly English and retain an old surface. The form is an ancient form that is closely related to the neoclassic movement started in the late 18th century but used throughout the 19th century. The casting is crisp with details or a modified egg and dart border around the top edge. The belly of the urn is deeply ribbed and the handles are cast separately to get a clean clear casting then attached after the finished piece is assembled. The pedestals are of the same age and show evidence of old paintwork but the marbleizing is of a later vintage. While they are usable right away the pair could be repainted or changed to accommodate any color scheme desired.
