"Under the Sea, " Large, Rare Art Deco Bowl by Thomson for Upsala Ekeby
About the Item
This remarkably large and dramatic low bowl from the Swedish ceramic firm of Upsala-Ekeby was designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson in the late 1940s. Here she depicts seaweed, coral, sea shells and brightly-colored fish, all interacting in compact formation. Thomson was one of the first female designers for a Scandinavian ceramic firm, starting at Upsala-Ekeby in 1933. She won awards at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair and another international exposition in 1937 in Paris. One of her innovations was contrasting, as she does here, dark roughly-textured stoneware with high-gloss glazes in white, orange and yellow.
