Beautiful Wooden Box with Silver Rim and Chancay Textile Fragment from Peru

About the Item

This beautiful box was hand carved into two pieces from Cumarú wood (also known as Brasilian teak), there are no screws or nails and no assemblies. The wood is brown with visible grain and a dark hue at the bottom. The lid has an amazing fragment of Chancay textile with a geometrical pattern framed by a silver rim hallmarked "925". The Chancay culture flourished between 1200 and 1450 A.C. being its center at 80 km. from present-day Lima City, being absorbed later into the Incan Empire. These very ancient textiles survived to this day thanks to the very dry weather of the area, the Chancays were very skilled at weaving with cotton, llama, alpaca, and sheep wool. An original piece that bridges between far away past and the present.
