Berte Jessen for Royal Copenhagen Faience Danish Modern Lidded Ceramic Box

About the Item

A vintage circa 1970s midcentury Danish modern faience ceramic box by Berte Jessen for Royal Copenhagen. This lidded circular box is fully marked and has a beautiful and colorful design. The lidded pot is decorated with stylized seed pod designs. The wide cylindrical shape has a raised side decorated in slight relief with a continuous pattern of seed pods around the body in tones of blue, mauve and brown on a white ground within simple line borders. The piece has a flat fitted lid with similar stylized seed pod designs and the pot has printed marks along with a monogram for artist Berte Jessen. And for a little history on Berte Jessen, I offer this bio from the Lynways website, "Berte Jessen was born in 1937 and trained in Copenhagen at the Academy of Art and Design following her training she was employed by Royal Porcelain Manufactory Copenhagen. Berte married Klaus Köhle and moved to Germany where she ran a ceramics studio in Hechingern from 1972 until the early 2000s. During the time she worked in Germany she returned for long periods to Denmark as she took her inspiration from the country. She owes inspiration to her country - and not least the artistic education she received there both at the academy and at Royal Copenhagen." This piece embodies her unique inspiration and style. There seem to be some bumps on the lid that look like they're in the glaze. Other than those, the box is pretty wonderful.

  • 1980s Dansk Denmark Brown Mist Covered Casserole Serving Dish by Niels Refsgaard
    By Dansk
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage lidded casserole serving dish in Brown Mist by Niels Refsgaard for Dansk. You may know Dansk, if not don't worry I'll get to them later. For now, let's look at who Niels Refsgaard is. From a Dansk catalog, "Niels Refsgaard has been an integral part of the Dansk story for more than 60 years as a designer, creator, and brand champion. Niels prefers to be called a “simple country potter” and it is his amazing talent and devotion to his Craft that shines through in all that he creates. We can’t think of a design collaboration between brand and craftsman that has stood the test of time the way the Dansk and Refsgaard marriage has. That longevity has yielded much success along the way, as evidenced by the fact that so many of Niels’ dinnerware patterns are still active in the Dansk line today. We like to think of Niels as one of Mid-Century Modern’s ceramic masters, and as this design theme is enjoying renewed attention in the last several years we have not only re-issued some of Niels’ early work, we’ve commissioned him to develop a new approach to the casual dining experience." And now, let's look at the 'brown mist' design - Dansk Brown...
