Robert Picault Mid Century French Hand Painted Double Handled Dish Vallauris

About the Item

A large, double handled mid century hand painted ceramic dish by French artist Robert Picault. This dish features various geometric designs on the outside and a floral design on the inside. From the studio pottery website, “Robert Picault was born in 1919 and after studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris moved, at the end of World War Two, to Vallauris where, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the fifties. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterised by green and brown motifs on a white background. Picault died in 2000.”.

  • 1980s Dansk Denmark Brown Mist Covered Casserole Serving Dish by Niels Refsgaard
    By Dansk
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage lidded casserole serving dish in Brown Mist by Niels Refsgaard for Dansk. You may know Dansk, if not don't worry I'll get to them later. For now, let's look at who Niels Refsgaard is. From a Dansk catalog, "Niels Refsgaard has been an integral part of the Dansk story for more than 60 years as a designer, creator, and brand champion. Niels prefers to be called a “simple country potter” and it is his amazing talent and devotion to his Craft that shines through in all that he creates. We can’t think of a design collaboration between brand and craftsman that has stood the test of time the way the Dansk and Refsgaard marriage has. That longevity has yielded much success along the way, as evidenced by the fact that so many of Niels’ dinnerware patterns are still active in the Dansk line today. We like to think of Niels as one of Mid-Century Modern’s ceramic masters, and as this design theme is enjoying renewed attention in the last several years we have not only re-issued some of Niels’ early work, we’ve commissioned him to develop a new approach to the casual dining experience." And now, let's look at the 'brown mist' design - Dansk Brown...
