Erhard & Sohne Art Nouveau Casket, c. 1905
About the Item
A beautiful art nouveau casket made by Erhard and Sohne in Germany in c. 1905.
The casket is exquisitely executed with foliate detailing, made in the Gothic revival style in both polished and silvered brass and with a handle to the lid. It bears the Erhard & Sohne lion mark to the base.
The design is reminiscent of an ancient jewellery casket but in miniature size. It opens and closely perfectly, missing the key unfortunately but as is usually the case with an item of this age.
Erhard & Sohne were a significant name in metalwork in Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. Based in Schwäbisch Gmünd near Stuttgart, their output from the early 20th century was a high point in their manufacture, making this casket very collectable.
