Pair Of Ten-Light Candelabra After Pierre Gouthière, by Henri Picard, Circa 1870

About the Item

A Fine Pair Of Gilt-Bronze And White Marble Ten-Light Candelabra After The Model by Pierre Gouthière, by Henri Picard. French, Circa 1870. The gilt-bronze variously stamped 'PP'. This fine pair of candelabra with marble urns, masks and scrolling candle arms is based on the celebrated model attributed to Pierre Gouthière which were supplied circa 1785 by the marchand-mercier Charles Darnault for the 'Grand Salon' or the 'Salon du Jeu de Mesdames' at Château de Bellevue. They are now in the Petit-Trianon at Versailles (P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1987, p. 99, fig. 111). The bronze is stamped variously with the initials "PP" for the important fondeur and doreur Henri Picard. A number of related gilt-bronze candelabra from this period have been found bearing both the 'PP' and 'Picard' stamp together. Pierre Gouthière (1732 - 1813) son of a saddle maker, rose to become the most famous Parisian bronze chaser and gilder of the late 1700s, receiving commissions from some of the leading connoisseurs of his day. Like many successful apprentices, he married the widow of his first employer and took over his establishment. Success came quickly, and in November 1767 he received the title of doreur du roi (Gilder to the King) from Louis XV. Gouthière also supplied works to the Comte d'Artois, the Marquis de Marigny, and the marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre, among others. Gouthière was a master of chasing and invented a new type of gilding that left a matte finish. He combined polished with matte finishes to create varied effects on the surfaces of his bronzes. He made many types of objects, including furniture mounts, ornaments for mantelpieces and coaches, and mounts for porcelain or marble vases. The important fondeur and doreur Henri Picard worked in Paris from 1831 to 1884, most notably for the Emperor Napoléon III. He was based in Paris at 6 rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10 rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnitures and table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoléon III at the Louvre. An important pair of twelve-light candelabra by Picard remain in the Musée du Louvre today. Bibliography: Mestdagh, Camille & Lécoules, Pierre. • Important Pair of Belle Epoque Ormolu Candelabras w Frog Sculptures by H. Picard
    By Henri Picard
    Located in Lisse, NL
Truly unique pair of gilt bronze table candelabras by Henri Picard of Paris, France. These amazingly sculptural antique candelabras for more than one reason have the wow factor. First of all, they are made by one of the most famous and celebrated metal workers and 'fondeurs' of mid 19th century Paris. This artisan was commissioned by many important 'patrons', but Henri Picard’s most notable achievement was to supply Napoleon 3rd with various decorative antiques, some of which are still in the State Apartment of the Louvre Museum. The second reason why these candelabras are in a league of their own is the subject matter. Almost all Belle Epoque antiques have classical-world subject matters, but this pair clearly is different and it is this difference that makes this pair even more unique and remarkable. It is almost as if Henri Picard had already caught a glimpse of what was to come three or four decades later. We say so, because the subject matter (with animals and lotus or lily leafs and their organic design) is almost Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts in style. At the base of each of these candelabras are three endearing frog sculptures crouching under lotus leafs. A little further up the stem are a snail, a fly and a beetle sculpture, three creatures that regularly are on the frogs menu. And with the importance of frogs in French culture these candelabras also are of cultural historical significance. The third reason why we believe these works of art are of museum quality are the details. Besides the amphibian, mollusk and insects sculptures, you simply cannot overlook the remarkable details in the leafs, the branches and the floral decorations. They are of a quality and beauty that will make people want to stop, to look at and to study them. Like they would in a museum. Even all the original and removable bobeches AND the two bronze candle extinguishers...
