About the Item
There was a great appetite for things Scottish in Victorian England. Plaids, Scottish regiments, Tartan Carpets, Marmalade etc. The ram's head also makes an appearance on large, often regimental, snuff mulls. This inkwell is rather rare. The first we have seen for many years.
This fine bronze inkwell is modelled as a ram's head, with splendid curling horns, ears out at right angles and glass bead eyes. The fleecy surface is beautifully modelled with a finish at once smooth and well defined. The nose and face is hinged to reveal two ink pots and a pen holder, (liner missing). The ram has a rather noble expression. It is essentially life-sized
