Famille Verte Porcelain Inkwell by Samson

About the Item

Small famille verte porcelain inkwell decorated with enameled flowerpots, foliage, and stylized rinceaux. The inkwell is set on a gilt bronze base that is decorated with palmette and bands embellished with interspaced latticework encircle the inkwell. The lids, which cover a glass receptacle for ink, are sculpted with foliage and are topped with a rose-shaped handle. The corners are pierced with four holes which serve as pen holders. Samson mark under the base. circa 920 Dimensions: W 6.3 in, D 6.3in, H 3.5in. Dimensions: L 16 cm, P 16 cm, H 9 cm. The famille verte decor is part of the Chinese-styled production of the Samson factory. Ornamental pieces make up the larger part of the Samson collection, from the Qing era from the reign of Kangxi (1662-1722) and especially of Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1735-1795). The Samson production line catered to the European taste at the end of the 19th century for elaborately decorated pieces, as can be seen in the rich floral decoration of their trumpet vases, inkwells, plates, and basins. Around 1900, amateur collectors followed the advice of renowned collectors like Grandidier who, in his book La Céramique Chinoise (1894), extolled the artistic superiority of multicolored? porcelain. Consequently, these amateurs sought out decorative pieces from the famille verte or the famille rose, set in bronze if possible. The enamel from these pieces is often well done, even if they are more crude and cluttered than Chinese enamels. Pieces from the famille verte are undoubtedly more common in Western collections. • Chinese Export Famille Verte Porcelain & French Ormolu Chinoiserie Centerpiece
    By Edward Holmes Baldock
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine and large 19th century Chinese export famille verte porcelain and French figural ormolu-mounted Chinoiserie style centerpiece jardinière, in the manner of Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845). The circular-ovoid porcelain bowl or cachepot, maybe 18th century Jiaqing period (unverified), decorated with a blue and purple ground background with parcel gilt depicting pagodas, trees, mountains and landscape scenes, flanking scrolled handles issuing from the base and ending with a finely chased ormolu pierced acanthus rim. The two ends with a projected mask of Chinese Imperial lions or foo dogs, surmounted and raised on six finely chased ormolu masks of Bacchus satyrs flanked by seashell-like mounts. The Ormolu, circa Paris, 1880. The Porcelain circa 1800 (Maybe 18th century.) Measures: Height: 15 3/4 inches (40 cm.) Overall width: 21 inches (53.4 cm.) Depth: 17 inches (43.2 cm.) Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) was a prominent London furniture dealer to the Royal Family, father of Edward Holmes Baldock. He was first listed in the London trade directories in 1805. That listing had him operating out of No.7 Hanway Street in London, where he was described as selling "china and glass". An updated listing in 1821 described his business as "an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer", and in 1826 as a buyer and seller of "china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc". Between 1832 and 1837 he sold earthenware and glass products to William IV, and upon the ascendancy of Queen Victoria in 1837, sold china until his death in 1845. Baldock was one of the first antique dealers and is similar to the 18th century marchands-merciers Dominique Daguerre and Simon-Philippe. He was the father of Edward Holmes Baldock (1812-1875), a British Conservative Party politician, and of Mary Frances Baldock, wife of the philatelist W. A. S. Westoby. • 19th Century Samson Paris Porcelain Trinket Box
    By Samson & Cie
    Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a gorgeous French 19th century Samson Paris Porcelain Trinket Box probably by Edme Samson. Marked on the base with “Made in France” and unmistakably in the style and manner of Samson. The lid features hand painted floral bouquets on an ivory porcelain background with gold edging, surrounded by a sky blue lid with gold web or crackling effect.. The lid is hinged and the lid and base are edged in floral gilt metal mounts with Fleur De Lis clasp. It sits on 4 gilt metal or ormolu feet. The sides are likewise hand decorated. This wonderful antique hand painted box is just bursting with History. Inspired by Edme Samson of Samson & Co., Paris. we believe (based upon the markings and natural aging) that it was made between 1880– 1890 in France and was meant to resemble an antique of a much earlier period. It is very similar to Sevres pieces with it’s color, decoration and design. Samson specialized in reproducing antiques from the 1600 and 1700s. One of his most interesting works was his Heraldic or Armorial pieces. With this medium sized box, he was not only copying the larger porcelain caskets or coffin boxes...
