About the Item
The rape of Prosperina by Francesco Fabi Altini, (1830-1906) after the 17th century original by Gian Lorenzo Bernini now in the Palazzo Borghese in Rome. Signed F. Fabi Altini Rome 1870 on the base. The statue sits on a pianted wooden plinth.
The sculpture depicts the abduction of Prosperina or Persephone by the God Pluto to the underworld symbolized by the three headed dog at the base of the sculpture, called Cerberus who guards the gates of the underworld, preventing the dead from leaving
Francesco Fabi or Fabj Altini studied at the Roman Accademia di Belle Arti and then at the Accademia di San Luca under Tadolini. He completed his apprenticeship under Tenerani. Altini was also an Associate of the Academy of Ferrara, Perugia and Bologna.
Altini’s most famous work is a monument featuring the colossal figures of Meditation and Prayer standing at the entrance gates of the Campo Santo at Verona. Also quite well known is a statue of ‘Adam and Eve’ at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, California.
