Staffordshire Mr & Mrs Gladstone Pair Political Portrait Pottery Figures

About the Item

A rare pair Staffordshire pottery political figures titled Mr & Mrs Gladstone and dating from the latter 19th century. The cast figures portray prime minister William Ewart Gladstone standing holding a scroll document and resting his hand on a standing stone. He wears a period costume with a waistcoat, long jacket and bow tie. The base has a raised molded title reading MR GLADSTONE. His wife is portrayed standing alongside a small tree stump and mounted on an oval shaped base. She wears a long period dress and wears a cap on her head and holds a fan in her left hand. The base has a raised molded title reading MRS GLADSTONE. Both figures have a natural glazed finish with painted hair and eyes and both have gilding applied to some of the outlines and to the bases. The figures are not marked. Illustrated in P.D. Gordon Pugh's book "Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Era". Section B195, Plate 12 & 13, Fig 39 & 40 In good condition with some fine age craquelure to the glazed finish.

    Victorian pair of Staffordshire pottery hand painted copper lustre dogs with split legs, circa 1860. They have well defined fur, a black muzzle and golden eyes.
