Large Patinated Terracotta - Two Cupids Disputing A Heart After Emfalconet XIXth
Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
Magnificent and large sculpture in patinated terra cotta, entitled "Two loves disputing a heart" after Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791), resting on a terrace decorated with a frieze of pearls and reeds wrapped in ribbons This work was very successful in the second half of the 19th century, and was produced in bronze, marble, alabaster and terracotta.  Two winged lovers are represented in a fight to recover a heart figured on the base.   Period : End of XIXth century Circa : 1898 - 1900 Dimensions : Height : 50cm - Width of the base : 28cm Signature : " Falconet " on the terrace. Marked in hollow : GC below Artist, man of letters and aesthetician, the career of the sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716 - 1791) is particularly exemplary. Overcoming the handicap of his birth, this brilliant self-taught man with an extraordinary personality rubbed shoulders with the greatest. Protégé of Mme de Pompadour, friend of Diderot and the Encyclopedists, he was able to impose himself by his talent and his culture. The works executed at the church of Saint Roch and his position as director of sculpture at the Manufacture de Sèvres are in a way the prelude to his work in Saint Petersburg.  The imposing bronze Cavalier...

Set Of 3 Altar Candlesticks Candle Holder - Bronze - Period: XIXth Century
Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
A delightful set of three bronze altar candlesticks. Originally, candlesticks usually stood on three legs, topped with a knot and a wick to hold the wax. In the centre of this cup is a spike on which the candle is placed. The candles on top are made of wax, white for festivals, yellow for funeral services or times of penitence.  In accordance with traditional practice, the candlesticks are placed on the altar itself or on a tier that is itself placed on the altar. They are framed by a cross which, if possible, matches them.  Period : 19th Century Dimensions : Pair: Height: 47.5cm - Width of base: 14.5cm - Diameter of bobèche: 12.5cm Dimensions : Height : 49cm - Base width : 16cm - Wick diameter : 13cm According to custom, the number of candlesticks is two, four or six, depending on the degree of solemnity of the celebrations.  A seventh candle is required when the diocesan bishop celebrates a stationary (pontifical) Mass, and even more so when the Pope is Bishop of Rome.  The sacred light is first and foremost a symbol of joy and, in ancient times, a sign of respect and honour.  Candles should be made of beeswax. Derived from the juice of flowers, the wax represents the flesh of Christ formed from the virginal body of Mary, flesh that will be consumed for us. When lit, the candle has multiple meanings.  First of all, it represents Jesus, the light without which we grope in broad daylight. The flame is the sign of Christ's divinity.  It also symbolises faith in these mysteries. White candles, made of purified wax, are symbols of joy and gladness, while yellow candles...

Natural Stone Sculpture - Sodalite - China - Late 19th Century Period
Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
A very fine piece of natural stone, Sodalite, made in China. Finely chiselled, this large statue depicts a scene of life in which several ancient symbols stand side by side, such as the Phoenix, swallows, a horse, earthly abundance with its luxuriant vegetation, fruit, but also food from the ocean and its generous fish, a man, a woman and a child. First discovered in Greenland in 1806, Sodalite was analysed by a Scottish chemist 5 years later (1811), Mr Thomas Thomson. Several long years went by without it achieving any real success. It was not until 1891 that the stone was recognised as an ornamental stone.    It was during a diplomatic trip to Canada in 1901 that Mary de Teck (wife of King George V) discovered Sodalite and fell under the spell of this natural stone.  The princess ordered a large quantity of Sodalite to decorate her London flats. Sodalite quickly became fashionable.   Period: Late 19th century - Napoleon III Dimensions: Total height with base: 92cm x Width: 31.5cm x Depth: 27cm Dimensions of wooden base: Height: 7cm x Length: 25cm x Width: 23cm But what do these symbols mean? The phoenix, a mythological bird, symbolises purification and rebirth, as it is said to rise from its own ashes.   This magnificent bird is also synonymous with good fortune, opportunity and luck in Asian cultures. In feng shui, the phoenix is also one of the four celestial animals (sometimes also known as the red bird or red raven). The red phoenix...
