Antonio Prieto Signed Mid-Century Modern California Studio Pottery Large Vase
About the Item
A beautifully shaped, relatively large, and sumptuously glazed Mid-Century Modern California Studio pottery vase by Spanish American master potter Antonio Prieto. The work features a gorgeous plum-purple glaze with hints of browns and reds. It is one of the best pieces of his we have come across.
Prieto was born in Yaldepenas, Spain on August 23, 1912. He immigrated to the United States as a child in 1916. After studying at Alfred University from 1943 to 1946, he chaired the Ceramics Program and taught at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland (now California College of the Arts) from 1946 to 1950. At the time, F. Carlton Ball was teaching ceramics at Mills College. When Ball left Mills, Prieto succeeded him. He taught there from 1950 to 1967, at which time he amassed one of the most impressive collections of studio pottery including pieces by artists such as Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, Henry Varnum Poor, Peter Voulkos, and Marguerite Wildenhain. After his passing, the Prieto family donated the collection to the college where The Antonio Prieto Gallery was created to exhibit the works which included many of his pieces.
The vase is signed by Prieto on the base.
Prieto's work can be found in a number of collections including:
Mills College Art Museum, Mills College, Oakland, California
Scripps College, Claremont, California
The Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET), New York
The National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.
The Cleveland Museum of Art
Craft in America, Los Angeles, CA
The Forrest L. Merrill Collection
This work would be a great addition to any collectors of his work or Mid-century Modern potters/artists or a very eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.

A beautiful design with a delicate long neck rising from a circular base. Classic and timeless. Signed by Beatrice in her customary "Beato" on the underside of the base (with noted inventory number).
