Martin Brothers Aubergine Mottle Glazed Bottle Vase

About the Item

A stylish Martin Brothers stoneware vase of ovoid bottle shape with narrow waisted cylindrical neck and probably quite an early example dating from the 19th century. The vase stands on a narrow round base with round bulbous shaped body and with a narrow tall neck with trumpet shaped opening. The vase is decorated in mottled aubergine glazes on a buff ground with pale blue glazes to the inside neck. The vase is incised Martin Bros London to the base. Provenance: from the private collection of a Belgian gentleman. The vase is in presentable condition however has a number of raised air bubbles or blistering to the glaze caused in firing some of which have natural underglaze splits with a lower larger bubble having caused a fine natural surface crack which runs part of the way around the body.
