Martin Brothers Early Unglazed Black Pottery Double Face Mug

About the Item

Possibly a rare early experimental piece a black unglazed pottery double face mug by R W Martin and dating from the 19th century. The mug is thickly potted and of rounded shape with simply molded faces to two sides and with a thick loop handle. We have handled later examples of this piece however in view of the more restrained patterning believe this may have been an earlier prototype which had been left unglazed. The mug is signed R W Martin London & Southall to the base and is also indistinctly dated. Provenance: Acquired from the British Art Market. The mug has been professionally restored as the brittle nature of the original unglazed construction had failed. A rare and unusual item.
