"Poppies and Tulips, " Extremely Fine Art Deco Vase by Fontaine for Sevres, 1927

About the Item

One of the most exquisitely designed and painted Art Deco pieces we have ever seen, this flaring vase by Anne Marie Fontaine for Sevres features a flaring, trumpet-form upper section over a tapering base, all in deep red, black and grey glazes over a cream ground. The artist has depicted a tangle of flower forms, including tulips and poppies, interlaced with a thicket of branches, all very finely painted. This piece was made in 1927, just two years after the famed Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), which later gave the Art Deco style its name. Fontaine was one of Sevres' finest and most celebrated artists, creating a number of pieces that are considered the epitome of Art Deco elegance. The piece is marked on the bottom and is signed by the artist.
