Jean Despres Champagne Bucket, 1950
By Jean Despres
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
This stunning champagne bucket by Jean Després, crafted in France around 1950, is an exquisite example of his masterful silver-plating technique. The design features a cylindrical body with hammered detailing, a hallmark of Després' signature style, and is adorned with two scrolled handles that are accentuated by spherical accents. At the top of the bucket, you'll find a delicate Jean Després flat-link chain decoration, adding a refined touch. The piece is signed with "J.Després" etched under the base, verifying its authenticity and craftsmanship (see photo). A similar model can be found in the book Jean Després, Jeweler and Goldsmith Between Art Deco and Modernity by Melissa Gabardi, specifically on page 151, published by Editions Norma (refer to accompanying photos). Jean Després (1889-1980) was a renowned French goldsmith known for his distinctive approach to Art Deco jewelry and functional objects. His legacy includes creating innovative silver, gold, and pewter pieces, breaking away from traditional designs by using bold, geometric forms and hammered textures. Després' works were highly regarded in avant-garde circles, and he enjoyed a close friendship with notable artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. This champagne bucket is not only a stunning decorative object but also a symbol of Després' groundbreaking contributions to the Art Deco movement. Perfect for collectors and admirers of modernist French craftsmanship. Exhibitions 1925: Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, with Rose Adler and the painter Étienne Cournault 1925: International Exhibition of Decorative Arts 1926: Salon des indépendants 1928: Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts 1928: Salon des Artistes-Decorateurs 1930: Union des Artistes Modernes, at the Pavillon de Marsan, he exhibits surrealist jewelry...

French Napoleon III Period Ebonized Crystal Cave a Liqueur Service Set
Located in Forney, TX
A charming period Napoleon III Second Empire (1852-1870) brass accented ebonized wood and crystal French cave à liqueur. France, mid-19th century, an object of practical use as well as beauty, add a touch of sophisticated elegance and refinement to your next dinner party with this scarce antique cave à liqueur (petite liquour caddy), featuring an ebonized wooden box-form case inlaid with brass string banding, the locking case opens by turning the original key to release the latch lock mechanism then gently lifting the hinged top and front panel, revealing a richly figured mahogany fitted interior, housing a lovely assembled etched crystal liqueur service, including a pair of hand blown crystal decanters decorated in elegant flowing fiolate vine etchings with matching stoppers, accompanied by eight stemmed cordial drinking glasses with geometric etching patern; the folding panels can stay in the up/open position when in use or for display, or press the hinge mechanism to close the panels, then you can lock it and remove the key to secure the contents, the case is finished on all sides so it can be placed anywhere in the room, all raised on short turned feet. circa 1860 Dimensions: (approx) Closed: 10" High, 8.25" Wide, 7 7/8" Deep; Open: 15.25" High, 8.25" Wide, 10" Deep; 5.5lbs Total **Additional photos available upon request** CONDITION REPORT: Good antique condition with nicely aged warm worn patina and desirable unrestored original finish. Wear consistent with 160 years of age, use, handling and exposure, including retaining antique character marks and charm throughout, worn distressed original ebony finish, with scattered nicks, scuffs, scratches, rough spots and very minor chippy paint losses. The imperfections not noticeable in most lighting or at most angles, however we went way out of our way to make sure to capture the flaws in the photos to try and be as transparent and upfront as possible. Please be sure to inspect all the photos. Overall a wonderful assembled set, sturdy, stable, structurally sound, all crystal intact with typical wear but no cracks or damage. Overall a wonderful example, with nothing that detracts from the aesthetics or functionality but only adds to the sophisticated elegance, warmth, antique character, classic refinement, and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time! Sue et Mare for Orfèvrerie Gallia / Maison Christofle, Art Deco Jug c.1925
By Christofle, Sue et Mare
Located in Bath, GB
A highly sought-after silver plated jug designed by the famous French designers (see below) Louis Süe and André Mare for the Orfèvrerie Gallia / Maison Christofle c.1925. Just back from our silversmith's workshop, it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory; any shading are reflections; minor wear to the interior commensurate with age and use. A magnificent piece of history and as relevant for today's interiors as it was nearly 100 years ago. Excellent condition spanning 7 1/2" handle to spout x 4" x 7" tall. Any black marks seen on the body of the jug / pitcher are shadows not marks. Item: 44016 FREE Worldwide Registered Airmail Directly From the UK Sue et Mare The spirit of collaboration was alive in the age of Art Deco. No duo quite exemplified this ideal more than the one known as Süe et Mare. Taking their knowledge of fine art and their shared experiences in the war with them, Louis Süe and André Mare were able to shape trends in the shift from Art Nouveau to Art Deco and beyond. Their designs, inspired by Cubism, excited the Paris Salon of the time and remain relevant even today. Louis Süe was born in Bordeaux in 1875 to a wine merchant and his wife. Drawn to the arts, Süe abandoned a path which would have led him into the École Polytechnique to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in 1893. There he studied painting as well as architecture design, and in 1902 was able to exhibit with a number of his contemporaries in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. After working in various Parisian artists’ workshops and spending time in Vienna (where he was introduced to Cubism), Süe joined L’Atelier Français, an interior design firm made up of a number of his contemporaries, and where he first met André Mare. André Mare was born in the Norman town of Argentan in 1885. Feeling stifled by his conventional upbringing, he left in 1904 to enroll in the École des Arts Decoratifs. In 1906, Mare also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, showing his furniture design and setting himself apart as a leader among his cohort. In 1912, along with Marcel Duchamp and others (and concurrent to his involvement with L’Atelier Français) Mare created La Maison Cubiste, a section at that year’s Salon d’Automne dedicated to radical interior design. The outbreak of the First World War briefly interrupted the two men’s collaboration. Süe was drafted into the French Army and served in the Greek campaign. Mare, meanwhile, developed new camouflage techniques for the French, British, and Italian armies using his knowledge of Cubism. But this function did not keep him from the front. In 1916, he was wounded by shrapnel in Picardy while helping establish a lookout post, and in the same year was awarded the Military Cross by George V of England. In 1919, Süe and Mare resumed their professional relationship by cooperating with Gustave Jaulmes on designing the victory celebrations in Paris for the war’s end. The next year the pair founded the Compagnie des arts français, focusing on creating designs for furnishings and interior accessories. While adhering to the Art Deco style, their designs were more conventional, harking back to the Louis XIV and earlier periods, and less focused on geometric intricacy. Highly decorative, their pieces featured flair such as sculpted floral and fruit motifs, scalloped edges, and inlays of ivory and mother of pearl. Working primarily as decorators and furniture designers, Süe and Mare did find time to continue participating in exhibitions, particularly the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, where they constructed an actual museum of contemporary art. Other projects included the booth for the Ambassade de France and the interiors of the steamship SS Île de France.
