"Bellerophon and Pegasus", Art Deco Tile by Ponti for Milan Triennial V in 1933

About the Item

Produced to promote the Richard Ginori firm's exhibition at the Milan Triennial V exposition in 1933, this exceedingly rare glazed tile depicts Bellerophon taming the wild Pegasus. The winged horse is shown attempting to ascend into the sky, but he is restrained by the bold Bellerophon, shown here as a lanky, nude figure. The artist is probably Gio Ponti, who by 1933 was Ginori's star designer, having created a wide array of designs for the firm's ceramic pieces -- bowls, vases, jars and tiles. Ponti worked as an architect and designer par excellence, and for the Triennial he also designed the 354 foot high Littoria Tower, now known as Branca Tower, originally topped by a panoramic restaurant. We cannot find another example of this tile, so it may be a unique survivor. The tile's reverse shows the firm's mark.

This piece is a rare example of the work of Mario Brunetti, who was part of a circle of sculptors and ceramicists influenced by the enormously successful Lenci workshop in Turin (Torino). Brunetti favoured mythological subjects, but his work is extremely rare. This motif of Bellerophon, shown nude with Greek cap, restraining the rearing Pegasus...
