Doulton Burslem Spanish Ware Painted Plate

About the Item

This porcelain plate from Doulton Burslem is decorated with s design from Doulton's "Spanish Ware" range. In this case a hand painted bough of raspberries, foliage and flowers has been done, using a very soft palette, and outlined in gold on a graduated fawn ground. This type of ware was developed by John Slater and, although it was considered a new and unusual decoration for the time, it remained popular from the early 1880's into the early 1900's. This pattern is C 774 which was issued around 1885, and the decorator's mark, MD could be for Mary Denley. "Spanish Ware" has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book "The Doulton Burslem Wares"as "featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground". This plate measures 230 mm (9 inches) in diameter and stands 20 mm (.75 of an inch) high. It is in very good condition, with minimal rubbing of the gilding. It dates from the period 1891-1905.
