Early John Ridgway Soup Plate Aukland Chinoiserie Pattern, English, circa 1835
About the Item
This is a very decorative, Imperial Stone China (ironstone), large deep plate or soup bowl by John Ridgway, dating to the William IV period of the 19th century, circa 1835.
This plate has been carefully hand painted, over a printed outline, in bold colorful enamels with a striking chinoiserie pattern called AUKLAND, to the central well and separate borders to the cavetto.
John Ridgway operated at his father’s celebrated Cauldon Place works, Shelton, Hanley, England, between 1830-1856, producing some Fine porcelain and stone China of excellent quality. His stone china earthenware's and ironstone wares are discussed on page 305 to 309 of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wares written by Geoffrey Godden for the Antique Collectors Club.
This piece is fully marked to the base with a "Imperial Stone China" printed Royal arms mark, incorporating J R below in the ribbon and the pattern name AUKLAND.
We date this piece to the William IV period of the earlier part of the 19th century, circa 1835.

- Early Davenport Ironstone Mug Hand Painted Chinoiserie Pattern 659, circa 1815By Davenport PorcelainLocated in Lincoln, LincolnshireThis is a rare and early stone China (Ironstone) mug which dates to the George 111 period, circa 1815 made by the Davenport factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England. The mug is straight sided similar to a coffee can and has a loop handle with an upper thumb rest. The pattern is number "659", which is one of Davenport's very few chinoiserie patterns. The bold pattern features striking polychrome enamels of rocks and different flowers all in the Chinoiserie style, hand painted over-glaze in different colours over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is embellished with good hand gilding. There is also a deep border pattern to the inside rim which replicates the outer mug pattern with sprigs of hand painted flowers.
