Minton Majolica Twin Handled Game Pie Dish & Cover

About the Item

A stylish and impressive antique English majolica pottery game pie dish and cover by renowned and sought after maker Minton and dated 1867. The earthenware dish stands raised on four small corner twig feet and is of oval basket shape widening to an everted rim. The basketweave is intertwined with fruiting leafy oak stems which also form handles at either end. A cover sits within a top recess and is finely molded in relief with a dead rabbit and two birds set against an oak leaf and fern ground with an oak stem forming a handle. The dish is beautifully and richly hand painted in bright majolica colors with a painted green and brown body and naturalistic colors to the birds and rabbit on the cover. The inner dish, inner cover and base are painted in bright rich turquoise glazes and the base has impressed MINTON marks along with a date code mark for 1867. Provenance: Private Collection, Heydon Grange, Norfolk, England and acquired through the UK Art Market. In good condition with customary wear and aging and with a tiny glaze chip to the edge of one bird wing which could be easily touched in.
