Set of 3 Antique Advertising Pots

About the Item

Set of 3 antique ceramic lidded advertising pots with wonderful transfer prints. Each one was "found" by an archeological enthusiast who continues to recover them from old Victorian dumps particularly in the London area. Due to the fragility of the pots and the fact that they were just thrown away, it is amazing that any survived. Therefore a few nibbles and crazing should be expected! Holloway's Ointment - This pot dates to the 1880s where Holloway operated on Oxford Street, London until their move to The Strand where they remained open until around 1910. At 2 shillings and nine pence, it was quite an expensive pot of ointment. The image is of Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health,cleanliness and sanitation and of her young brother Telesphorus, the demi-god of convalescence. Boots Toothpaste - Over 100 years ago, Jesse Boot of Nottingham set up chemist shops all around the United Kingdom known as Boot's Cash Chemist. The areca nut toothpaste was.sold in Europe during the late 19th century, and was made from the pulverized charcoal of betel nuts, also known as areca nuts and packaged in these wonderful ceramic lidded pots. Probably didn't taste as "minty" as the toothpaste we are used to today! Fortnum & Mason Caviar - Fortnum & Mason have been an iconic fixture on Piccadilly since 1707. Considered the place to purchase exotic and high end groceries, it has always been frequented by the "foodies" of the time. Caviar was certainly sold to the "upper class" and packaged in these wonderful ceramic pots. Although it has a Royal Warrant on the lid, it is understood that Fortnum & Mason has never held a warrant from a King. Cauldon, however, who produced these pots, obtained their Royal Warrant in 1924 from King George V.
