19th Century French Art Nouveau Stoneware Cider Pitcher with Satyr Handle

About the Item

Large 19th century Art Nouveau stoneware cider pitcher with a detailed satyr, faun or devil hanging on a tree branche handle. Unfortunately I know nothing about the maker's mark stamped in the bottom, in which you can see the initials FS. What I do know is that I liked this high tankard straightaway when I spotted this on an antiques fair here in the Netherlands because of its pretty colours, elegant high shape and because of the way the Satyr is made and hangs on a tree branche which forms a handle.

Antique heavy cast brass satyr with grapes and grapevines in his hair. With this grape and leafage it easily could be Bacchus and his pointy ears make him also a pan kind of figure. This cup is not as big as the drinking cups you see with the same satyr, this cup is smaller and it has an insert in which a piece of wood with bristle fits. This satyr cup is a pen wipe, from back in the days when people used a fountain or a crown pen and ink and you needed your pen brushed...
