Green and Gold Florian Ware Pitcher by William Moorcroft

About the Item

A decorative pottery pitcher created by William Moorcroft for James MacIntyre & Co. in 1903. This pitcher is part of William Moorcroft's Green and Gold Florian line. In producing these wares, Moorcroft utilized a medieval ceramic technique of piping liquid clay onto an earthenware body to create designs in low relief. This process resulted in crisp designs of decidedly Art Nouveau inspiration which stood out against richly colored glazes. The green and gold colorway of William Moorcroft’s Florian wares was his most popular, with rich olive green, goldenrod, and cobalt glazes accented with intricately piped white slip. Moorcroft’s Florian wares met with great success almost immediately after their introduction in 1903, winning him a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Indeed, a pitcher similar to this one was exhibited at the International Exhibition, praised as being “distinguished by refinement in design and colour.” Dimensions: 10 7/8 in. H x 5 1/4 in.
