A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver mounted, cut glass claret jug, an addition to our wine and drink related collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver and cut glass claret jug has a circular rounded, globular form. The cylindrical neck is fitted with a fine and impressive plain sterling silver hallmarked mount with the original hallmarked flat hinged cover. The cover is surmounted with a simplified tri-lobed silver thumb piece. This antique claret jug is fitted with a plain angular rounded handle with scrolling upper terminal and featuring a leaf ornamentation to the lower portion. The glass body of the jug is embellished with a cut glass swirl design to either side, conjoining with undulating bands to the circumference. The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with a star cut base. Condition This antique sterling silver and glass claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition. The glass is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface and part hallmarks to the cover have wear due to their location and in keeping with age; the maker's mark to the cover and the mount are not deeply struck but remain legible. An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jugs made by Elkington & Co; an addition to our Victorian silverware collection These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver jugs have a tapering ovoid body onto a circular domed foot, in a Classic ewer style. The waisted neck of the each jug is embellished with a bright cut engraved undulating band of stylised leaf decoration flanked by plain applied ornamentations in addition to a broad band of scroll and simplified Akroter designs. Each jug is ornamented with individual fine and impressive female Grecian style figures, the first bearing a vine terminating staff and holding out a handled bowl, another passive character featuring long braids in her hair and holding her skirt in one hand and a tied bundle of wheat in the other and the third holding in both hands grapes with flowing garments intertwining her body. The lower portion of each body is encircled with a band of lobed decoration incorporating a circular motif to each alternating terminal, all filled with a matte pattern. These antique silver jugs are fitted with hallmarked domed hinged covers surmounted with an impressive scrolling lobed thumbpiece and featuring an imposing scrolling hinge. This wonderful lime green glass decanter was crafted in Bohemia, a historic region which now forms part of the Czech Republic, in the late 19th century. The piece was created for the Persian (modern-day Iranian) market. The decanter features an ovoid body with a cylindrical, knopped neck and flared mouth. This is covered by a stopper with a panelled base, a knopped centre and a conical tip. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Italian silver sterling jug. This exceptional antique Italian sterling silver jug has an oval paneled, flared form onto a circular domed foot. The surface of this antique jug is plain and unembellished, with a matte, subtly planished finish in keeping with the patination of a piece from this period. This impressive piece is fitted with an exceptional cast sterling silver scrolling handle, accented with a leaf design emanating from the thumbpiece, this leaf ornamentation comprises the upper terminal. The circular foot is encircled with a band of embossed bead decoration. This impressive antique silver jug has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as sterling standard silver (925/1000). Patination or Patina is a subtle coloration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look. Condition This antique silver jug is a very good gauge of silver and exceptional quality for its type.
