William Brownfield Aesthetic Movement Carp Jug Attributed to Christopher Dresser
About the Item
An unusual and large William Brownfield & Sons Aesthetic Movement majolica style pottery carp jug most probably designed by Christopher Dresser and dated 1879. The large red earthenware jug is formed from two entwined large carp in the Japonesque style the mouth of one forming the upper lip and pouring spout and the other head forming the lower body. An ornate scroll work handle is applied to the side. The jug is decorated in majolica style dark terracotta glazes and has various impressed marks to the base. The design is attributed to Christopher Dresser with carp designs originating from Japan where many of his influences came. The jug has a date mark for 1879.
