Set of Antique Hand Painted D. Dewsberry Iris Cabinet Plates for Doulton Burslem

About the Item

This set of eleven hand painted cabinet plates were made by the Doulton Burslem factory, later known as Royal Doulton, in England in circa 1900 in the period Edwardian style. Each plate is hand painted by David Dewsberry, and highly regarded artist of the period regarded as a master of specifically painting the Iris flower and depicts a different species, or in Latin for example "Oncidium Forbesi". These cabinet plates have heavily gilt fluted pie crust edges and bear the early backstamp for Doulton Burslem and a stamp for whom they were made for in London. Each plate has a hand written notation on the top identifying the respective species in Latin with the scribbled signature of the artist underneath. Ten of the plates are in exceptional period condition showing no chips, cracks or crazing to any of the edges, etc. and all ring 'true'. One does have a significant crack across it, which is visible from the front as presented in the photos.
