Ink Well with Chinese Flowers decoration, Wedgwood, circa 1820

About the Item

An ink well, mode according to Wedgwood's patent, which stopped the ink from evaporating. Made in black basalt, with a form of decoration known as 'Chinese Flowers' to the company; often described as Famille Rose decoration to collectors. This name refers to the design's origina in Chinese porcelain decoration using a similar palette. Black basalt is a type of fine-grained, hard stoneware that was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Wedgwood was known for their high-quality black basalt ware, which was prized for its durability and resistance to chipping and cracking. It is exceptionally fine when left undecorated, but also takes various forms of decoration well: enamelling, bronzing, gilding, and encaustic painting are all found and all are very successul.
