Asprey, London, Antique Cut Glass & Silver Match Striker

About the Item

A handsome English Edwardian match strike made from clear glass, hand cut in an attractive bark-effect topped with a solid sterling silver mount fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1902. The silver is also fully signed by the world famous Asprey of Bond Street. Excellent condition measuring 3 3/8" in diameter x 2 1/8" tall. Asprey is a British retailer of jewellery, leather, silver and other luxury goods. Founded in 1781, the House has historically been recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent luxury goods brands and has a substantial client base of members of royalty, heads of state and important actors on the world stage. For over two centuries, Asprey has been regarded as a top British luxury lifestyle brand and the Bruton Street Flagship Store is considered a must see London destination. Asprey’s broad product assortment includes jewellery, leather goods, accessories, silver, watches, clocks, first edition leather bound books, china, crystal, games, silk and accessories. At present, Asprey holds a Royal Warrant from HRH Prince of Wales for jewellery and silver. Founded in 1781 by William Asprey, was originally based in Mitcham, Surrey until the company moved into central London premises. From there, Asprey advertised ‘articles of exclusive design and high quality', whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment. The 20s and 30s were a golden age for Asprey. It embraced the new style, now known as ‘Art Deco’ but then called ‘moderne’ or ‘Jazz modern’, introduced by the Paris Exposition de Arts Décoratifs in 1925. Its iconic designs reflect the new energy and originality, Asprey’s catalogues of this era are beautiful anthologies of luxury goods.     An exceptional, fine and impressive, large antique George V cut-glass and English sterling silver mounted desk inkwell made by Asprey & Co; part of our antique silver and glassware collection. This fine antique George V cut glass and English sterling silver mounted desk inkwell has a plain cuboid form with rounded corners. The neck of the antique glass inkwell is encircled with an impressive silver mount and fitted with a compressed circular hinged hallmarked sterling silver cover. The cover opens to reveal the removable glass ink liner. The interior of the cover retains the original gilt interior. The impressive glass body of this inkwell is embellished with hobnail style deep cut glass ornamentation to the underside. This fine example of antique silverware has been crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Asprey & Co Ltd. Dimensions: Height to top of cover 10cm/3.9" Width 11.3cm/4.4" square Diameter of liner 2.5cm/1" Height of liner 2.8cm/1.1" Condition: This antique glass inkwell is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The inkwell has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. The glass is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount have wear but remain legible.
