Fine 19th century trinity house marquetry inlaid rosewood sewing box, circa 1870, made by a Trinity House Lighthouse Keeper or sailor aboard a Lightship for sale to passing ships. The rosewood box features marquetry inlaid cutter-rigged sloops sailing past a lighthouse within a crossbanded reserve on the lid, and additional inlaid cutters and escutcheon on the front. The interior is fitted with a velvet pincushion and various cuddies both open or covered by a rosewood lid with petite ivory finial; the tray lifts out to reveal a paper-lined storage compartment. The bottom of the box retains its original paper covering. Delicate marquetry inlay does not survive well in the damp environments of lighthouses and ships, so these highly prized Trinity House boxes...

A Fine Two Day Marine Chronometer by Victor Kulberg No. 9270 c,1870 Three tier mahogany box with rectangular brass plaque to both the top and the second tier below a brass ‘push button’ knob opening to a third tier with round brass escutcheon. The movement has full hatched plates, chain fusee with four ringed pillars and ten jewels with Harrison’s maintaining power. Earnshaw type spring detent escapement with split bi-metallic balance and cylindrical shaped temperature compensation weights, polishes steel helical balance spring and faceted endstone. The four and three quarter inch silvered dial signed ‘Victor Kulberg, maker to the Admiralty, The Indian and Italian Governments. 105 Liverpool Road, London. N.’ Numbered 9270 with Roman numerals and subsidiary dials for ‘state of wind’ and seconds. Inside the seconds dial bears the mark denoting military use. The movement is set in a lacquered brass bowl with screw down bezel mounted within a pivoted gimbal with knurled locking screw and original tipsy key. Victor Kulberg was born in Gothland, ( Sweden) in 1824, he then worked for Louis Urban Jurgensen...
