Hellesens Advertising Pocket Knife

About the Item

Designed as a copy of their dry cell battery, this Hellesens advertising pocket knife measures 49 mm (2 inches) in length, is 17 mm (2/3 rds of an inch) wide and measures 3 mm (1/8th of an inch) thick. The Dane, Frederick Hellesen (1836-92) designed what is thought to be the first dry cell battery, and founded the W Hellesen company to manufacture batteries in Denmark. This pocket knife was made in Germany, with the blades bearing the maker's mark of SMF for Stocker & Co., of Solingen, a city long known for its blade makers. It is in good condition, with the blade springs still strong, but there is some pitting to the blades. One blade is a knife while the other is a file. C 1935.
