About the Item

Often attributed to Kalmar Lighting this flower chandelier is by Sische Lighting of Germany. This chandelier has been thoroughly cleaned respecting the vintage patina. It is newly rewired with gold cable which is earthed. It is in full working order & ready to install. Light bulbs included. Sculptural when viewed from all perspectives, this pendant would suit a range of interiors such as Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, 70`s Glam, Post-Modern or Contemporary. The solid brass base has four quality glass flowers. These are held in place to the frame by screw rings which make up part of the lamp holder. The frame is made of four solid brass bands with a square profile. These run upwards to create a lantern-like shape. At the top & bottom they are bound together by a chunky brass disc & decorative brass bolt. The chain is also solid brass in a `needle & eye` form. At the top there is the original ceiling cup also in solid brass. To fit this chandelier to the ceiling there is a `triangle` hook fitted at the top of the brass rod, which is covered by the ceiling cup. There are many quality details present, The flat brass rings between the bulb & glass shade add depth as does the polished brass round surfaces behind the shades. The textured clear glass shades are in a brutalist geometric shape, each very thick and of significant weight. The pendant has been newly rewired with an extra 3 metres of gold cable at the top so the height could be extended by adding brass chain if needed. This pendant carries 4 small screw standard E14 light bulbs up to 40 Watts each. A range of decorative effects can be achieved by fitting different light bulbs such as Pygmy clear light bulbs for a subtle look, or `Pop` with Gold Crown bulbs. At present fitted and photographed with 4 Gold Crown light bulbs of 40 watts each, which are included in the price, available in most electrical stores or over the internet. The 4 glass flowers are all in excellent condition. The brass frame is in very good condition and sturdy, with the original clear lacquer present on the brass and only minor rubbing & patination in line with age adding character. Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport, the glass pieces would be removed and individually wrapped in a layer of bubble wrap, foam & soft cardboard. The frame would be wrapped in bubble wrap. Together these parts would easily fit into a box ideal for posting. Additional dimensions: The dimension of each glass flower is Height 13 cm, Width 13 cm, Depth 6 cm. In 1881, Julius August Kalmar founded Kalmar, a Viennese company that produced handcrafted objects of cast bronze. Kalmar developed a fine reputation and exhibited internationally often, but it was Kalmar’s son, Julius Theodor (J.T.) Kalmar, who took over in 1913 and made the company shine with its modernist lighting.

Having studied at the Birmingham School of Art and Design and under the Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, J.T. was deeply inspired by the shift to modernity taking place in Europe and sought to work with the leading architects and designers of his time, including Austrian Werkbund architects Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach as well as Ernst Plischke, Clemens Holzmeister and Oswald Haerdtl. Similar to the Wiener Werkstätte cooperative cofounded by Hoffmann that prized materials, form and function, Kalmar viewed his company’s lighting fixtures as “quite humble things” meant to “fit in and serve their purpose of functionally illuminating spaces without glare.”

In 1925, Kalmar began selling in Haus und Garten, the forward-looking decor shop founded by Frank and Wlach. By 1931, a close partnership with the Austrian Werkbund association of architects, artists and craftsmen allowed the company to realize its vision of early 20th-century modernity — a distinctly Viennese pairing of traditional workmanship with contemporary technology. These collaborations included chandeliers and other fixtures using traditional materials such as glass, bronze and brass while focusing on function over ornamentation. As the company grew, so too did the scope of its projects, and soon Kalmar was installing extravagant chandeliers for the Vienna State Opera, the Burgtheater, Vienna stock exchange and other sites.

Under the guidance of Rudolf Calice, J.T. Kalmar’s son-in-law, the 1960s saw Kalmar’s popularity grow, thanks in part to the success of more decorative pieces like the ice-glass fixtures created with Austrian sculptor Karl Gruber. Thomas Calice, the great-grandson of Kalmar’s founder, led the company in the 1990s and its expansion to international lighting projects while shifting away from serial production. In 2009, Thomas’s son August Chalice established Kalmar Werkstätten to produce fixtures that reference the Kalmar archives but also feature updates on the iconic designs. Kalmar continues to produce bespoke fixtures while also working on custom lighting projects around the world, from cruise ships to the Burj Khalifa.
