The pair of monumental period baroque carved, painted and silver-gilt pricket sconces from the collection of Michael Smith were carved in Italy between approx 1680 and 1700... These would have been a visual feast for the eyes as would have the entire chapel creating a sense of the conscious lifting in profile of the arts that happened in response accompanying the counter-reformation. This very dramatic pair of Italian baroque corner pricket single light wall sconces come most likely from a cardinals private chapel as indicated by the large carved and raised miter and flowing double sashes that are centering the shield-shaped panels forming the body or the sconces. Further decorative elements include flowering cornucopias and carved acanthus leaves projecting up and out around the center medallion. The large central arm projects out from the bottom and raises from large acanthus carved leaves up to a ribbed bold upright topped by the candle bobeche and pricket. These once formed part of the collection of the designer Michael Smith and have been pictured in one of his books on design...
