Louis XV Style Ormolu-Mounted Mottled Granite-Marble Candelabra, Attr. F. Linke
About the Item
A very fine French 19th-20th century Louis XV style ormolu-mounted mottled granite-marble urn seven-light candelabra, attributed to François Linke (1855-1946). The tapering ovoid body applied with a pair of scrolled handles cast with acanthus-sheathed bulrushes, on a spreading foot and square plinth with acanthus clasps, topped with an ornate scrolled candle-arms, each with a floral design protruding from a clasp of cast-fruits. (Unsigned), Paris, circa 1900.
The model of present vase is after a single example carved in porphyry, formerly in the collection of the Duc de Tallard. At the sale of Tallard's collection in 1756, the vase was purchased for 5,001 livres by the marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame de Pompadour. Following the death of his sister, Marigny lost his position as directeur général des Bâtiments, together with the sumptuously decorated hôtel that came with it, and the vase, together with other contents, were purchased from him by the Crown. Later displayed in the Salon du Premier Consul at the Tuileries, where it remained through to the end of the Second Empire, the vase is now in the collection of the Louvre.
François Linke (d. 1946) was awarded the gold medal for his Grand Bureau at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He was the most celebrated Ébéniste of his time. Born in Bohemia in 1855, he moved to Paris in 1881. He produced furniture of the highest quality at his workshops at 170, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, and established showrooms at 26, Place Vendme. Some of Linke's early productions were neither signed or stamped.
