“The Restaurant of the House of Representatives” Engraving by Harper's Weekly
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original wood engraving is titled “The Restaurant of the House of Representatives, Washington, DC.” It was published as a double-page image, in the August 12, 1893 issue of the famous 19th century newspaper Harper’s Weekly. The print was illustrated by Charles Stanley Reinhardt. The House Restaurant, a unique part of life in the Capitol, has been in the same location since the 1857 Capitol Expansion. Congressional members’ busy work schedule made the availability of food on site a necessity. But the restaurant also served as an informal meeting spot for members to continue conversations and deal making. This 1893 print illustrates the convivial atmosphere. Details including elegantly dressed tables...

Rare Monumental 1890 Antique 42 Star United States of America Flag
Located in Dayton, OH
Monumental fifteen foot 42 star American flag, circa 1889-1890. The 42-star flag is rare because only a limited number of 42-star flags were produced after Washington became a state on Nov. 11, 1889. But it takes a more intimate knowledge of flag trivia to know just why it happened this way. White stars are added to the blue field of the star-spangled banner on the Fourth of July after a state is admitted to the union. In the fall of 1889, several western territories became states. Dakota was admitted, and then split into North and South Dakota, on Nov. 2, 1889, which made them state and star numbers 39 and 40. Montana was named the 41st state on Nov. 8, followed by Washington, on Nov. 11. Only a few flag manufacturers began producing 42-star flags before the official addition of the 42nd star on July 4, 1890. Those who tried to jump the gun by being the first to produce an up-to-date flag were surprised when Idaho was admitted to the United States on July 3...

“On the Moors” or "Dogging" Signed by Heywood Hardy, Antique Print, 1894
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin. Hunting has a long history in England and is considered a very traditional activity even today. One of the most popular forms of hunting is called “wildfowling” and targets wild geese and ducks. Often conducted on coastal marshes, wildfowling is typically a solitary or small group sport unlike the grand group fox and pheasant hunts...

13 Star American Flag with Hand-Sewn Stars in the 3rd Maryland Pattern
Located in York County, PA
13 hand sewn stars in a circular version of what is known as the 3rd Maryland pattern, with an especially large center star, a flag with especially tiny scale among those with pieced-and-sewn construction, exceptionally rare, made circa 1890: 13 star flags have been flown throughout our nation’s history for a variety of purposes. They were hoisted at patriotic events, including Lafayette’s visit in 1824-25, the celebration of the centennial of American independence in 1876, and the sesquicentennial in 1926. They were displayed during the Civil War, to reference past struggles for American liberty and victory over oppression, and were used by 19th century politicians while campaigning for the same reason. As the number of stars grew with the addition of new states, it became more and more difficult to fit their full complement on a small flag. The stars would, by necessity, have to become smaller, which made it more and more difficult to view them from a distance as individual objects. The fear was that too many of them close together would become as one white mass and distort the ability to identify American ships on the open seas. Keeping the count low allowed for better visibility. For this reason the U.S. Navy flew 13 star flags on small boats. Some private ship owners mirrored this practice and flew 13 star flags during the same period as the Navy. Flag experts disagree about the precisely when the Navy began to revert to 13 stars and other low counts. Some feel that the use of 13 star flags never stopped, which seems to be supported by depictions of ships in period artwork. This was, of course, the original number of stars on the first American national flag, by way of the First Flag Act of 1777, and equal to the number of original colonies that became states. Any American flag that has previously been official remains so according to the flag acts, so it remains perfectly acceptable to fly 13 star flags today by way of congressional law. Since there was no official star configuration until the 20th century (1912 specifically, beginning with the 48 star count), the stars on 13 star flags may appear in any one of a host of configurations. Some of these are more rare and desirable than others. The stars of this particular flag are arranged in what has come to be known as the "3rd Maryland Pattern." This configuration, whether oval or circular, is appreciated both for its visual appeal and the scarcity of its use. a circular wreath of 12 with a single star in the center. The name comes from a flag that resides at the Maryland State Capitol in Annapolis, long thought to have been present with General Daniel Morgan at the Battle of Cowpens in 1781. According to legend, the flag was supposed to have been carried by Color Sergeant William Batchelor of the 3rd Maryland Light Infantry and was donated to the State of Maryland by Batchelor's descendants. The story was disproved in the 1970's, however, following an examination by the late flag expert Grace Rogers Cooper of the Smithsonian, who discovered that the Cowpens flag was, at the earliest, of Mexican War...

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed to Charles Gordon, November 18, 1898
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This autograph collage features an original typed and signed letter by Theodore Roosevelt. The letter was typed on Republican State Committee letterhead, and is dated November 18, 1898. Roosevelt wrote the letter to Charles Gordon to thank him “heartily” for his congratulations. Roosevelt was elected the governor of New York just ten days prior to this letter. Roosevelt signed the typed letter on the right, just above the centerfold. The signature reads, “T. Roosevelt” in dark ink. Still one of the most popular U.S. presidents today, Theodore Roosevelt had an eventful life. He grew up with a very active lifestyle in the West despite having asthma and a weak heart. Holding various political positions throughout his career, Teddy famously paused his personal career goals during the Spanish-American War to raise his own volunteer cavalry, the “Rough Riders.” Holding the position of Lieutenant Colonel, Teddy led his men into Cuba and charged valiantly up San Juan Hill in 1898, a decisive battle effectively ending the Spanish-American War. Shortly after Roosevelt's return to the United States, Republican Congressman Lemuel Quigg asked Roosevelt to run in the 1898 gubernatorial election. Roosevelt defeated incumbent Frank Black in the Republican caucus by a vote of 753 to 218, and faced Democrat Augustus Van Wyck, a well-respected judge, in the general election. Roosevelt campaigned vigorously on his war record, winning the election by a margin of just one percent. As governor, Roosevelt learned much about ongoing economic and political issues that later proved valuable in his presidency. He studied the problems of trusts, monopolies, labor relations, and conservation. In June of 1900, during the Republican National Convention, Roosevelt was unanimously nominated for Vice President on the Republican ticket with President William McKinley. Not yet six months into his term as Vice President, President McKinley was assassinated and Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th president. During his time in office, Roosevelt is most known for his National Monuments Act protecting wildlife sanctuaries, the Grand Canyon, and establishing federal forests. He is also responsible for the construction of the Panama Canal, is remembered for his corollary to the Monroe Doctrine proclaiming the U.S.’s right to intervene in cases of wrongdoing around the world, his commitment to expanding the Navy, and his strong oratory skills. Roosevelt also won a Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation between Japan and Russia in 1906. A man of many interests, he published over 25 books on history, biology, geography, and philosophy. Roosevelt had many progressive policies and was the first president to invite an African American guest, Booker T. Washington, to the White House. He committed himself to the “Square Deal” fighting against trusts to regulate industry. Roosevelt ran again for the presidency in 1912 backed by a party he created called the “Bull Moose Party...

Large Late 19th or Early 20 Century Hand Made Woolen Naval Flag
Located in Nantucket, MA
Scarce antique flag with the Commodore Perry motto from the War of 1812. A fine woolen bunting flag with machine stitched border (dating it to after 1841) and with hand cut and cross-stitched letters (in comparison stars were usually done this way until the 1880s, and rarely after the 1890s). The header has brass grommets which became standard by 1890 (until restricted during World War II). Despite having apparently only enjoyed light use, the fabric has warped a bit from age. Overall this flag clearly dates from before WW II, and all physical evidence strongly indicates an origin from circa the 1890s. "Dont Give Up The Ship" was the battle cry from the Battle of Lake Erie, echoing the dying words of Captain James Lawrence when the USS CHESAPEAKE was lost to HMS SHANNON off Boston on 1 June 1813. His friend Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry...
