This crucifix, cast in solid bronze, is known as a Nkangi Kiditu, qui signifie « Christ protecteur », and is from the Kongo people of the Congo. Christ is portrayed with his head inclined to the left, his eyes closed and his mouth shut. The right ankle over the left, with a small loin cloth cast, the nipples marked and with radiating geometric patterns to denote his ribs and hair. Most impressive objets d’art, born in France in the second half of the 19th century, most likely Parisian gilded bronze and brass ormolu work, exceptionally executed sculptural form, the exquisitely detailed architectural cathedral shaped case having a removable pointed steeple roof with cross finial, opening to relic display case surrounded on all sides by original glazed glass panes, stepped base, rising on disc feet. Signed, stamped by maker / bronzier "BC" (unknown) model "5096" and other faint marks to lid interiors.

History:
A reliquary (also referred to as a shrine, by the French term châsse or monstrance) is a container for important religious relics.
The earliest reliquaries were essentially boxes, either simply box-shaped or based on an architectural design, taking the form of a model of a church with a pitched roof. These latter are known by the French term chasse, and typical examples from the 12th to 14th century have wooden frameworks with gilt-copper plaques nailed on, decorated in champlevé enamel. Limoges was the largest production centre; NB the English usage differs from that of the French châsse, which denotes large size rather than shape.
Relics of the True Cross became very popular from the 9th century onward and were housed in magnificent gold and silver cross-shaped reliquaries decorated with enamels and precious stones. From about the end of the 10th century, reliquaries in the shape of the relics they housed also became popular; hence, for instance, the skull of Pope Alexander I was housed in a head-shaped reliquary. Similarly, the bones of saints were often housed in reliquaries that recalled the shape of the original body part, such as an arm or a foot.
A philatory is a transparent reliquary designed to contain and exhibit the bones and relics of saints. This style of reliquary has a viewing portal to view the relic inside. The feretrum was a medieval form of reliquary or shrine containing the sacred effigies and relics of a saint.
During the later Middle Ages, the monstrance form, primarily used for consecrated hosts, was sometimes used for reliquaries. These housed the relic in a rock crystal, or glass capsule mounted on a column above a base, enabling the relic to be displayed to the faithful. Reliquaries in the form of large pieces of metalwork jewellery also appeared around this time, housing tiny relics such as pieces of the Holy Thorn, notably the Holy Thorn Reliquary now in the British Museum.
Condition:
Superb museum quality examples, in excellent original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged patina. Wear consistent with age and use. Heavily patinated - scattered oxidation. Overall wonderful examples.
Typically reliquaries were not sold in pairs, so to find a matching pair such as this is exceptionally rare.

Looking at Christ like this and thinking about the gruesome way in which He lost His earthly life, the crucifix (in our view) is a symbol of what 'telling people the truth' can lead to. 'The truth does not have many friends' is something I once read. Looking at what is going on in the world today, in most countries that still is the case. However, we feel that we (humans), nevertheless, are still becoming more loving, civilized, empathetic and self-conscious. Mind you, this good size wall crucifix dates from the early 1900s and the cruelties that people did to one another for acting or being different than 'normal' in those days, in most cases were far worse than what we see in this day and age. Looking at Christ on the cross with this in mind, we have come along way and we are slowly, but surely evolving in the right direction. Maybe it is just some of our 'leaders' who are lacking behind. Christ on the cross should therefor also be a reminder of someone who has lived and foreseen all this and who should therefor always be a beacon of hope and light when things are not going our way, yet. Rare size, solid bronze, Victorian Gothic box with multiple church window-like panels.
Over the years we have sold a number of rare and unique boxes, but never a Gothic Revival one of this length and looking like a medieval antiquity. Let us start of by saying that this antique box truly looks much better in real life than in our photos. There are as many as 28 Gothic church-like panels depicting biblical scenes all around. They are not the most detailed, but we feel this was done in an attempt to make this antique box look truly time-worn and medieval. Anyone who knows what it took (in terms of time and skills) to create this box will be just as enthousiastic as we were when we first saw it. It would have taken the artisan(s) working for Adolph Frankau of London quite a few hours (if not days) to first design this luxurious box piece on paper. The Gothic cathedral windows would then have to be hand carved out of wood or handmade using clay or another material. Then molds would have to be made from those sculptural plaques after which they would have been cast in bronze. The castings would have to be polished and the panels would have to somehow be welded together. Then any sharp edges would have to be grinded down and all the pieces of this box would also have been patinated and the lid hinged. When you look at this box with that in mind then you will see it in a whole new perspective. Have you also noticed the beautiful Gothic leaf pattern on the lock plate? This fully marked antique box comes with a working lock and key, but we will not try to close it, because one never knows if it will open again. If it won't then you have to damage this beautiful antique to be able to open it again. This rare and long antique box actually is a copy of what special Gothic boxes would look like in the 14th, 15th and 16th century. Back in those (Medieval) days these long Gothic boxes were made for safe-keeping and transporting parchment rolls and/or ordinances. In all our years we have never seen an antique copy...

This early Arts & Crafts era pendant has an aesthetic beauty that you don't find anymore in this day and age. It has the most pleasing to the eye shape and amber color and the handcrafted brass has a marvelous patina. In images 2 and 3 you can see that this unique light fixture started its life as (and still is) a candle lantern. Because of the Gothic quatrefoil details this may have been a sanctuary lamp at the entrance of a church or monastery. The beautifully patinated brass is all hand-crafted, but the unique art glass shade with its unique hand-etched, flowery patterns and amazing color is what makes this antique truly special. Have you also noticed the 'stand-alone' etched oak branches with acorns? They symbolize growth and unlimited potential since an acorn can grow into a huge oak tree that, by itself, can seed an entire forest.
