Midcentury Made Art Deco Style Bowl of Hygeia Symbol for Medicine / Pharmacy

About the Item

Unique, sizable and top quality workmanship 'pharmacy sign'. Some antiques you only find once in your life and we believe that we will never again find a handcrafted sign of such rarity, beauty and quality as this solid bronze and brass bowl of Hygeia (after the Greek goddess of health). Let alone one that is in such superb condition. This sign is so rare that in fact there is no category on 1stdibs in which it fits, which is why we chose to place it in this 'Scientific Instruments' section. Just like the rod of Asclepius this bowl of Hygeia symbol represents everything to do with health and healing. However, signs like the one we are offering here (or anything even remotely similar) are like the proverbial needle in a haystack. Also, because having one made (by an artist) of this quality and of such beauty and costly materials would cost a fortune. Especially in this day and age. This sign will stand fine on its strong brass base, but there also are holes via which it can easily be mounted anywhere you like (with just a couple of screws). If you already have a place/space in mind for this rare and meaningful work of beauty then maybe you should be its next custodian. This will also make a unique and great gift for a friend or loved one who really is passionate about everything to do with health and health care. Maximum height x width x depth: 16.1 x 13.4 x 2 inches. Width x depth of the rectangular brass base: 9 x 2 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish and meaningful and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).

  • 1924 Propaganda Style Art Deco Drawing Switzerland and French Revolutionary Wars
    By J. Nusink
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and original work of art about the history of Switzerland and France. This impressive and powerful work of art is definitely unique and interesting for many reasons. First of all, the style in which this charcoal drawing (with patches of watercolor) was made, is typical of the era and a joy to look at. Secondly, the posters of this era are rare and sought after, so to find an original drawing makes this antique extra desirable. Thirdly, the powerful male and female figure show a kind of determination that is often found in propaganda posters from this era, but the quality of the execution lifts it to another level. Fourthly, if you read about the French revolutionary...

  • Pure Art Deco Crucifix w. Stylized Bronze Sculpture of Christ on Silkwood Cross
    Located in Lisse, NL
Marked altar crucifix with a brass base with Christogram and a bronze corpus with a Gothic crown. For us the most powerful statement will always be 'the truth will set you free'. It is what we have learned most from the life of Christ and of His teachings and it is the one thing we always think about whenever we look at a crucifix. Anyone who has tried to break down his/her ego and found a clearer consciousness in the process, knows how healing and rewarding that journey can be. After that you can only be grateful for all the good things that are bound to come your way. Good things will come your way, because the universe needs people like you. Both the beautifully designed wooden cross and the Art Deco bronze corpus of Christ have an amazing patina and together they make this meaningful antique a true work of beauty. The striking, geometrical Art Deco details of the corpus of Christ combined with the Gothic crown with the trefoil symbols (for the trinity), truly makes this a stunning and impressive work of religious art that will never cease to impress. This antique European altar...

  • Art Deco Style
    By Assouline Publishing
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
At the dawn of the twentieth century, the world yearned for a new design style that would embody contemporary culture. Efforts to create a design language suited to the needs and tastes of the modern world took shape during the first decades of the new century, crystallizing in Paris with the 1925 Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The Art Deco period encompassed a multitude of decorative influences, including the updating of historical styles, the introduction of exotic elements and the adaptation of avant-garde art currents such as the geometric abstraction of Cubism. Not a single style or a unified movement, Art Deco is a design idiom that reflects a decorative approach to designing appealing consumer goods during the interwar period. Encompassing every discipline within the applied arts, Art Deco manifested itself to some extent everywhere around the world, perhaps the first design idiom ever to do so. Art Deco’s fundamental appeal lay in its decorative qualities, which consumers found attractive and glamorous. From skyscrapers, locomotives, automobiles and ocean liners to fashion, advertising and everyday home furnishings and appliances, Art Deco style...
