Tall Finely Hand Carved Oak & Porcelain Antique Wall Barometer Made in Amsterdam
About the Item
Stunning design Dutch Arts and Crafts era barometer and thermometer.
It even comes with a small gilt brass maker's plaque inside the barometer window that reads W.J. Lauwers, Gravenstraat 1, Amsterdam.
This late 19th or early 20th century, Dutch manufactured wall barometer has everything that makes an antique worthwhile. The quality of the workmanship is very high. The stunning floral carvings with the sheaf of wheat at the top (just below the perfect condition thermometer) are some of the most precise and sharpest you will ever see on an antique barometer. The design and execution of both the hand-painted thermometer and the easy to read face of the barometer reveil the amazing workmanship of the craftsman in those days. This antique is truly stylish and aesthetically pleasing and both instruments are very easy to read. Also, because of the original, clean and excellent condition glass. The circular glass front of the barometer is perfectly beveled and this antique 'weather station' also has the most beautiful patina. Finally, both the hand-painted thermometer on its 'milk-glass' background and the striking barometer with its Dutch words / lettering are in good working order and both are perfectly original and untouched. Behind the glass of the barometer there even is a small and stylish, gilt brass maker's plaque that reads W.J. Lauwers, Gravenstraat 1, Amsterdam. Both the barometer itself and the costly name plaque are indications that Mister Lauwers clearly aimed for the upper class clientele in late 19th and early 20th century Amsterdam. If you are Dutch or have Dutch roots then, besides learning something about weather conditions, this also is perfect for teaching and learning a few Dutch words.
