Large Antique Victorian Oak Banded Embossed Leather Dome Top Steamer Trunk Chest

About the Item

A large and impressive Victorian era dome top steamer trunk, circa 1870s. Features a tooled leather frame wrapped in black metal with oak banding and gold medallions. Opens to two litho portraits on the lid and a compartment for additional storage. Steamer trunks, also known as cabin trunks or traveling trunks, were originally used as luggage for extended trips by steamship, train, or stagecoach or for taking to boarding school. Many were quite elaborate inside and out. Steamer trunks have a distinguishing curved or barrel top and can weigh as much as 100 pounds. Today, they are used as furniture or storage. Trunks have been used around the world for thousands of years. The small, flat-topped trunk, we see in use today were popular during the Victorian era and were used primarily for storage. They were usually made of pine and covered in decorative material or leather. Dimensions: 35" x 18.5" x 28"h

    Wear consistent with age and use. Good Overall; wear commensurate with age and use. Missing leather handles. Central lock is broken and latches don't align perfectly. Interior compartment on the lid is split / loos. Some peeling paper on interior.
