Brazilian Modern 4 Chair Set in Hardwood & Cane, Joaquim Tenreiro, Brazil, 1950s

About the Item

Available today, this Mid-Century Modern chair set made in Brazilian rosewood and caning designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in Brazil during the fifties is absolutely magnificent! Each chair features four delicate legs, a seat in cane and a backrest consisting of seven horizontal wood bars. The wood has been refinished and besides the marks of age, the set looks awesome. The caning is new and was done by our Marcelo, our caning “Ninja” in Rio de Janeiro. The chair set is displayed in our showroom together with an “Alex” dining table from Sergio Rodrigues and the convo looks stellar! This Brazilian Modern gem effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. About the author: Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) was among the leading furniture designers and visual artists in mid-20th century Brazil. Tenreiro was born in Melo, Gouveia Municipality, Portugal into a family of woodworkers and carpenters. In the late 1920s, he emigrated to Rio de Janeiro and began working for the firm of Laubisch & Hirth. In the early 1940s, Tenreiro was among the first designers in the Brazilian furniture industry to adopt a European modernist vernacular. His initial efforts, including the 1942 "Poltrona Leve," met with considerable success, and in 1943 he established his own firm with factories in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. However, it was not until the 1950s that he began to be recognized as a master furniture designer in Brazil. His design philosophy found a great response with architects who supported modernism. • Brazilian Modern Chairs in Hardwood & Cane by Alexandre Rapoport, 1960s, Brazil
    Located in New York, NY
Available today, this pair of midcentury modern chairs made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda & Cane designed by Alexandre Rapoport in the 1960’s are gorgeous! The delicate set features a Rosewood structure with caning in the seat. The Brazilian Rosewood is nothing less than spectacular and displays vibrant wood veins that almost feel the chairs are alive! The pair is extremely light weight, as a result of the Jacaranda's aging process. Extensive logging has virtually eliminated Rosewood from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate. This gorgeous set would look great in any mid century modern, modern, contemporary environment used as dining or accent chairs. About the author, Alexandre Rapoport (Rio de Janeiro, 1929) is a Brazilian painter, architect, draftsman and engraver. Self-taught of Russian origin, he began painting at the Faculty of Architecture before the end of the 1950s. He studied drawing with Ubi Paiva and, while a student, attended engraving classes by Raymundo Cella at the National School of Fine Arts; it was then that he participated in his first group exhibitions promoted by the Federal Government. He had contact with Cândido Portinari...
